I've dealt with this brand a few times before, and have not had any complaints. This is the second pair of stud earrings, and both of them have been particularly good choices, especially at the price point. These are lab alexandrite, which in this case means they're going to be more of a lavender/pink shifting to darker purple/blue rather than red/green that you find in natural stones. Based on the color story alone, I'd suspect these may be color change corundum as opposed to chrysoberyl in terms of mineral composition, but both are acceptable for created alexandrite. To see the color change, you have to use two very different light temperatures. Traditionally it's daylight vs nighttime/firelight, but basically you can get the same effect with cool LED vs incandescent or candlelight. (If you have a light source that will color change, it's super easy to see.) The setting, post, and backs are all stamped 925, and nothing reacts to a magnet. The setting is a sort of scalloped basket but with a solid body back side, reminiscent of a pointy sort of flower. The stones themselves don't have an easy at-home test, but thermodynamically they do NOT react as I would expect from cubic zirconia, which would be the most likely cheaper substitute. I don't have the equipment to swear they're alexandrite, but I can say that they are NOT consistent with what I would expect to be passed off as alexandrite by somebody acting sketchy. They're cut nicely and have plenty of light movement. At $30 (less 15% coupon) for a set of 6.5mm stones (3.6cttw, or 1.8ct per ear), I think these land firmly in good value territory. I've seen good quality cubic zirconia go for almost as much, and lab stones are real stones, just created in a lab rather than the dirt. (Beware sketchy sellers who DO pass cz off as "created" or "lab" gems - that is not true but they're sort of bending the language to their own ends. That is NOT the case here, but heads up, eyes open on that concept in general.) ... show more

We purchased the RANDES 925 sterling silver birthstone earrings in Alexandrite as a birthday gift for a close relative. They're beautiful but not ostentatious, the perfect gift that's unique but not pretentious. These gem stud earrings have a nice long post and a double notched back which clicks into place for extra security, reducing potential loss of the gemstone. A brief testing proved they do not feel heavy on the ear lobe. Alexandrite is appropriate for a June birthday. The color is is subtle, appearing as a pale pink/purple, depending on available light and skin color. The stone is round with a lovely cut which enhances the sparkle and shine. The post has a white gold hypoallergenic plating, lead and nickel free.
