I used these to make a scrabble tule project with my family’s names. A few things I didn’t expect were the edges to be finished which they were, the tiles to be so smooth and not need sanding, all uniform in color prior to staining, and to be free of defects. They were a little thinner than I imagined when I bought them, but they are still sturdy enough and all basically flat and not warped despite being pretty thin. I used a minwax stain and then a stencil to paint the letters in acrylic craft paint. Then I finished them all off with minwax polycrylic. The wood took the stain and sealant all well. I definitely will use these again for other craft projects. I think based on how smooth they are if I had used vinyl decals, that would have worked also (I was originally worried if it was “grainy” that vinyl wouldn’t stick so I opted for stencils). I thought buying these precut vs going to the hardware store and having my husband cut a big board would cost me more but I was in a time crunch. But honestly the quality of these and how smooth they were and all the same size was well worth the money and time saved. ... show more

I saw the scrabble board idea and thought it would be a fun project. I bought this product based upon its description of natural wood. When the product arrived it came in an anti static type storage bag. I was a little disappointed to find they were no soild wood but a sandwich. Thick material in the center sandwiched by two thin natural wood veneers. (See the first picture). There were some that had defects (second and third pictures) and the edges were chipped. I wanted to stain them and they took stain well but the stain made some of them delaminate so I had to glue them back down. When wiping stain off start from the center and wipe outwards because the rag I was using kept catching the edges and splintering. The tiles turned out well and I'm really pleased dispite the snags along the way. They are light weight yet sturdy and don't flex when you work with them. I used 2 sided tape to secure them to my wall and they look great. I would buy this product again for future projects. ... show more

    • Stencils are to big for boards

I bought these to make the classic family name crossword. This board is 4x4 as stated, is light weight and not flimsy but very thin (not something you can stick a nail through without splitting). However, know that if you purchase the stencils WITH the board, the bundle deal, the stencils are way too big for the wood. The number gets cut off and you have to put the numbers on separately. I also would like to share that in my experience with using this product it doesn't take stencil very well of you plan on using anything other than a marker, pen or pencil. Paint seems to continue to find its way underneath and bleeds through creating a not crisp letter. The wood is very absorbent so that could also be the issue. I am in a few craft groups and I saw someone used pieces of 4x4" wood to create a wall decor piece. They used everyone in the familys name to apper like scrabble. I loved it so much I bought these wood squares to try it myself. I am going to use my cutting machine to cut all the letters out and then adhere them to the wood. I haven't had enough time to sit down and design the letters yet but I have played around qith the wood pieces and they are perfect size. I didnt want anything to heavy or bulky, these wood tiles are exactly what I needed. The wood is smooth and easy to decorate. The possibilities are endless with these. If my project comes out how I plan I will definitely be purchasing more to make them as gifts for my family. ... show more

I ordered these tiles three years ago to make a Scrabble wall in my new house. They were exactly what I was hoping for. They had clean, smooth edges, were sturdy despite being thin, and painted up beautifully. They even had an awesome wood grain that showed through the paint, giving it just the rustic look I was hoping for. We're having another baby now, and I needed to add to the wall so just ordered another set. But the tiles I ordered were 5x5s instead of the 4x4s I was supposed to receive. So now I'm not sure if I should take a chance and order some more, or find some different 4x4s from another Amazon vender.... I'm taking a star off for that. There were several pieces that was stained very badly. I was not able to complete all my projects and had to order more from a different vendor who was less costly; however, these were sturdy and worked very good for what I needed. I will receive my new order later today and will post an edit to this review once I use them. My project did not take 7 days to complete with 100 tiles. I will order more at a later date, once I finish my current project completely and see how many more packages I need. As for the spoiled tiles, I will most likely paint so I can use. ... show more
