  • Nice Coin, but way overpriced
The coin is lovely but is more expensive than a 1/4 ounce gold eagle. The image wasn't worth the price.

  • This is a beautiful coin
This is a beautiful coin and I truly believe it will become a collector’s item in years to come. But there are things you should know if you’re seriously looking at this: 1) As I write this, the coin is still available at usmint.gov (it is actually minted by the US Mint) at a much lower price. 2) A tenth-ounce coin is about the size of a dime. Don’t expect a larger coin. There IS a full 1 oz coin also available at the mint website as well (obviously the price is considerably higher). 3) This particular coin has not really caught on in the hobby (that should be clear from the fact that they are still available at the US Mint—a lot of their coins sell out the same day). So don’t buy it thinking you can immediately resell at a higher price. Buy it because you want to own one right now. I do think the day will come when they’re much more in demand (for one thing, this is the first American coin to show Lady Liberty as an African American woman—it’s about darned time women of color were given this recognition and respect), and they probably will appreciate over time, but for now, just buy it if you like it and want it as part of your collection. Upshot: I almost never buy commemorative coins and rarely buy any coin at such high prices (even the lower Mint price for this one is usually too high for me—I’m just a hobbyist, not an investor). But when I saw this was still available at the mint I grabbed one. It’s gorgeous and I love it. ... show more

  • Always check US Mint first
The US Mint issues US commemorative coins usually for much less than they are being sold by re-sellers. The mint does sometimes adjust prices as the price of gold changes, so occasionally there are coins for a bit less for sale by re-sellers. Always better to get them from the source with collectible items, though. For those surprised by the size of the coin - gold is heavy. A one oz. coin is only about 2mm more in diameter than a Kennedy half dollar so 1/10 of that is going to be small. You can look up the specs for gold coins and get a sense is how big 1/10 oz is vs. 1/4 or 1/2 or a full oz. Commemorative collectibles from the US Mint always cost more than the value of the gold. Sometimes quite a bit more. If you’re a collector or really want this particular coin, it could be a good buy for you (from the us mint). If you’re looking to invest in gold, hoping the price goes up so you can cash in, then this is not the best choice. ... show more
