A tool like this is not going to be very helpful for professional framers. Measuring and marking the top and bottom plates with stud locations and then nailing to those marks is faster and works fine. This tool is for the rest of us who need a little help and a system for holding studs while nailing. It works very well to get perfect, even stud spacing. If a stud is warped or twisted, this tool can be used along with a clamp or two to hold the problematic piece in position before nailing. It can also be used to check existing stud spacing if needed. I have a couple other versions of this same tool; this is very similar in style, function and quality. This is especially handy when framing a wall by yourself, acting like another set of hands to keep things square/plumb before nailing. I found it also handy laying out ceiling/floor joists building a loft in my post-frame building. While this may be overkill for most professional framers, it's really nice to have if you're working alone on a sizeable project. There are a lot of framing jigs out there, some cast aluminum, some folded steel, all designed to make framing a standard stick-built wall faster and more accurate. What sets this jig apart is it can accommodate 12”, 14” and 16” on center stud spacing. The jig is cast aluminum, as such, it is sturdy and lightweight, with a convenient center mounted handle. The design works well with conventional two-by lumber. Each section is wide enough to accept kiln-dried or green dimensional studs with just enough play to allow easy removal yet tight enough to get precision stud placement. One thing to note – this listing is for ONE jig. I found to get the full benefit requires two jigs, especially if working alone. Prior to getting this jig, I used a few cutoff scraps to make spacers, which I clamped between studs to get consistent spacing without having to measure for each stud. This works well, but it is not as fast or convenient as using a set of these jigs. This jig has the added benefit of 12” and 14” spacing, which, although not “standard”, on some occasions is useful. As far as “value”, that is a matter of personal preference. There is no doubt that using this jig is faster and more convenient than not, it is a matter of what that time savings and convenience is worth to you. If you are solo framing a set of these jigs will most likely pay for itself very quickly. To be honest, at the time of my order, based on the picture, I thought this listing was for two jigs. I notice now the listing states “1 piece”. As I mentioned, to get the full benefit requires jigs top and bottom, at this price point that ends up being over $100, which to me is a bit of a stretch for such a simple tool, especially when less than $5 in scrap lumber and a few quick-clamps can achieve the same level of accuracy and similar time savings. I found spacer blocks work better with twisted or warped lumber. Bottom line: This jig does exactly what the listing says – it makes framing a two-by stick built stud wall quick and easy, especially if working alone. Two jigs and straight lumber are required to get the maximum benefit. ... show more

    • I don't do much framing; but this is a godsend.
I'm a DIY guy; but I do enough projects that rely on 16" spacing that this thing is absolutely a godsend. In particular a small back porch rebuild. This thing made framing the deck SO much faster than measuring and marking; I can't even express it. Even if you're doing just a couple small projects; this thing is a great investment! ... show more

Review for HONTAITUO 3 in 1 Framing Tool. Fairly lightweight an easy to understand and use. Gets the spacing right the first time, every time. I have only used it lightly, but it appears to be very durable and have no doubt it will stand the test of time. Removing the measuring certainly speeds up the job. This item is not a must-have, but it is certainly nice-to-have. No complaints. Finally, the price seems reasonable as listed at $65 which is $14 less than some other listings for what appears to be the exact same item. ... show more

Made of cast aluminum, this framing tool is strong and sturdy, but not heavy. Works well to keep boards stable and straight while screwing or nailing. Measurements are correct. Instructions are clear. Comes with a pair of gloves (too large for me). This will be a big help as we build our deck.
