  • Excellent Price, Very Good for Do-It-Yourselfers, Nice Case But a Possible Flaw
As an average Do-It-Yourselfer, having a set of files of various shapes and sizes around the house is a plus. Though I do not use files frequently, when I do need one, the ones that I have are usually not the best size and shape for the job. Thus, I ordered this set of files. Its variety of shapes and sizes will fulfill almost all my requirements – if they are of a lasting and durable quality. Are they? After I received the files I tried various ones of them on pine, oak, aluminum tubing, 1/4" stainless steel rod, and Trex fencing material – a dense and highly durable manmade material. (The advertisement says that the files can be used on glass. I did not try that). I have included pictures of some of the various materials I used the files on to give you an idea of how efficacious they were and what the blades looked like after filing with them. While the files did work on the Trex, wood, and the metal items, they worked best on the metals. They did file down the Trex, but the filings quickly clogged the files. The same clogging was true for the wood, but not as quickly, especially on the harder oak. The good news is that the wire brush that comes with the kit easily removed the filings. The files worked best on the steel rod and aluminum tubing. I used one of the small round files on the steel rod and, with a little effort, managed to cut a noticeable groove into the steel (see picture). I included a couple of pictures of the aluminum tubing, one showing the jaggedness left on the end of it after being cut with a saw, and the smoothness of that same end after filing it down with one of the small flat-bladed files and one of the small round files. It turned out well. Another plus using the files on metal was that they did not clog their blades to any degree like the wood and Trex did. I also used the large flat file on the outside of another part of the aluminum tubing (see picture). You can see that the serrations are quite noticeable. You would need to use one of the small files (or other grinding means) on it to smooth it out. I do like the rubber-like material on the handles. It does add comfort while using the files. The wire brush included in the kit is also a nice touch. The bristles are stiff enough to clean the blades of the files and the handle is long enough to easily grasp and hold on to. It should also be noted that though the kit is advertised as a 17-Piece kit, which it technically is (18-Piece if you include the storage case), there are only 12 unique files in the kit. That is because the kit includes 2 identical small round files, 2 identical small flat-bladed files with square ends, and 3 identical small flat-bladed files with pointed ends (see pictures). One other thing to note. The storage case is a good addition to the kit, allowing the files to be conveniently and compactly stored. I have had no problems with the zipper so far. The case also has a loop on the top of it, about 4” long, that allows it to be hung on a hook or nail out of the way. Each file, and the brush, are held in place by an elastic strap around the handles. The kit also has small pockets in it that the ends of the files fit into to keep them straight. All of this is nice, but I have noticed that the elastic straps are so tight that it takes more than a little effort to remove and then replace the files. I must use both hands to do so. But more worrisome than that is the blades of the files, particularly the large files, rubbing against the elastic straps as they are removed and replaced in the case. As careful as I am, I know that sooner rather than later, if I am not careful, the elastic straps will be cut in two by the files. Do the positives outweigh the negatives as listed above? Yes, for someone such as myself, a very average Do-It-Yourselfer, (certainly not a professional) this kit will serve my needs. That is especially true given its price, $17.99 at the time I ordered it, a good buy; and now listed at $15.99, an even better buy. ... show more

  • Good Assortment

  • A nice selection of files well organized in a serviceable case
These files are well made and serving well. The handles have a nice grippy feel although they are a little small for my large hands, which is a nuisance issue I have with many tools and not a fault of this particular product. Just be aware that if you have large hands they may not provide an ideal grip. I find the selection of small files to be quite handy for a variety of projects. Everything stays well organized in the included case. I have gotten into the habit of removing and replacing files by inserting the handle under the elastic lops rather than feeding the file through the loops first because it won't take long for the file to damage or cut the elastic material. In the past I've usually had a few files lying on the workbench near the vise causing clutter so it is nice to have all the files I need organized and stored compactly on a nearby shelf. I'm very happy with this set. ... show more

  • Amazing files for 3d prints
Love these files! I ordered them to use with my 3d prints and they have performed perfectly. I really like that they come in so many different sizes and that they are also in a nice zipper pouch. I can't attest to how well they work on metals, but for plastics, they make everything a breeze! Great value for the price and compliment my diamond needle file set really well. ... show more

  • Variety of sizes and shapes
A file set is not something you would consider a necessary tool in your house, and you may believe that one file will be enough for any filing needs. Well, after using this file set for over a month, I concluded it was an absolute necessity. I don't file things very often, but when I do, this set ensures that I have the right file size for every application. The files are well made, and the handles are comfortable to grip. The variety of sizes and shapes make this set an excellent tool. The set came in a sturdy carrying case, which is great for keeping the entire set together, and it includes a wire brush. So far, I've tried these files with both wood and metal, and they've worked great. For $24.99 (at the time of writing this review), I believe it is reasonably priced. ... show more

  • Look great; work okay
This file set looks terrific with its orange-on-black color motif. Even the super-comfortable file handles carry the motif. Love it or loathe it, I guess. I love it; beats dull gray any day. I haven’t used any of the files extensively, but I’ve used several on brief occasions, filing metal surfaces. They worked okay. (Not as well as they looked, but okay.) A couple of nitpicks. The first photo in the online description is misleading. In this photo, the 12 needle files are shown as being almost as long as the four large (12”) files. They aren’t. Their relative size is distorted in this photo/illustration. In actuality, the needle files are exactly half the length of the larger files, and they’re much, much slimmer. They’re needle files. Second nitpick. Are these files for working wood or metal? The description says wood or metal and implies the files are truly all-purpose. Moreover, the photo-illustrations show both wood and metal being worked. But when I took shop (admittedly some time ago), the instructors were adamant that a file is a file is a file and it is either for working wood or for working metal and never, ever (not even in an alternate universe) is any file suitable for both materials. The reason had to do with the coarseness (versus fineness) of the file’s teeth. Fundamentally different kinds of teeth were said to be milled into a file, depending on its intended purpose: wood or metal. Has that changed now? ... show more
