  • GOOD VALUE
Someone looking for a small motor for their boat where you cannot use gas motors it is a good replacement. It is better than using a trolling motor to travel with all the time. Also it is cheaper than most trolling motors. I have it on an 18’ Jon boat with decks and flooring and it will push it 5mph

  • Check bevel gears for hypoid oil...
One star as at this point I don't know If it even runs at all. However, after hearing the racket this thing makes in a few YouTube video, seeing that there are several sources of replacement gears, and others saying their lower gear unit had no oil at all, I decided to check mine before running it. Noise is bad news. It is a small percentage of the energy being consumed somewhere in the drive train. Motor, gears, bearings..by friction. And friction generates heat. And heat..failure. The likely culprit is the right angle bevel gears in the lower unit. The manual in my old Mercruiser Alpha One went on and on about the importance of full, clean 90 hypoid oil in the lower unit..no different for this $196 hopefully not pos. You can see above the plate under the prop sealing the lower unit is secured by 2 5mm cap Allen head screws. They come out easily. My top one was only hand tight. Now carefully pry out the plate without damaging any mating surface. Mine had no gasket, but there is an o-ring you will eventually see emerging on the lower cylindrical part of the plate. Don't damage it. Upon opening, my unit was about 1/3 full. I added Mercruiser 90 hypoid gear pil with the motor horizontal until I judged enough room was left to replace the sealing plate simply by evenly closing tight with the caps screws. Lubricate the O-ring with finger dipped in oil first, also inside of mating cylinder. I am now awaiting my 48v Lipo battery, and will update this and star rating after I get it running on my jon boat. 5/31/2024 I went for two battery setups, 4 12v 25a Lipo at $50 ea, and an ebike lithium at 48v 10a at $130 w/charger as backup.. The Lipo are delayed, 2 showed up. 2 seemingly lost. The ebike showed, and is what I will use for initial testing. With the lower unit now full with gear oil, I tried short dry runs. There is more noise than I would like...but seemingly from the motor..more later.. 6/5/2024 I have now tried the motor on a 1236 Chinese 3-section jon boat bought in 2007. Made in 3 sections connected by 'hinge pins' its easily transported in sections manually, but at the expense of horrible drag caused by the gaps between sections. Even so, with 2 adults, speed measured just over 5mph. Previously, this boat had 2 minkota 12v DC 55lb trolling motors hung outboard on each side, controlled by a wheelchair controller allowing skid-steer control. 40A 12v total gave 3 mph - a result of the terrible drag. So, on a similar size 'clean bottom' boat, you should see 5MPH or better. Noise - you are going to hear it at full throttle, but the 2 of us could still talk ok. At half throttle, 3 mph and conversation was easy. No unusual 'grinding ' noises fortunately. I am raising to 3 stars given unknowns on life and power consumption at this point. I plan on rarely using full throttle, mostly 1/2 @ 3mph, but it's nice to know 5mph is available if needed because of approaching storm etc. All in all, it's hard to see a better value motor elsewhere when you can get this one for $196.. ... show more
