When I bought this, I was not able to find any reviews about how this works at very low temperatures, so I was unsure if it would work for our area where it is not unusual to have single digits at night. It works great! We have had some nights below 10 degrees F now, and it not only keeps the water thawed, but on the highest setting the water is not even ice cold. We put down some bricks, then a thick piece of rubber (old conveyor belt) on top of them, then put the heated pad under the waterer on that, so there would be some extra insulation underneath. ... show more

I bout two sets of these for my four coops. I’m in Arkansas and we are in the middle of a severe snow and ice period. I was very spectacle of these little warmers they are very inexpensive and pretty small. Boy was I surprised when I put them in and discovered they kept the water from freezing! I don’t have metal watered. Mine are the five gallon buckets with cups. I can’t use those right now. They r much to big for these pads. I am useing it under metal pans. But it works! ... show more

    • This product shocked me literally. It’s silicone but not waterproof!

A small amount of water spilled from my chicken water and when I went to remove the pad I got an electric shock. Also it shuts off randomly, not just the heating element but the power shuts completely off. This product is not safe or reliable.

I'm going away for a couple of weeks weeks in the winter and needed something to keep the 5 gallon water bucket from freezing for my quail coop. Countless options for water heaters. Many of them are submersible, but the warnings scared me off. I'm sure some of them work but the "Do not run dry" warning was a risk. If there was a leak or the water ran out or something, I was worried about a fire or at least damaging the item. This is just a very thin rubbery disk (presumably with a thin wire coil inside) that goes UNDER the bucket, so it doesn't need to get wet or stay wet. The time function isn't particularly helpful, although if there was a on/off timer setting that could make it a potentially much better product (turn it on at night, off in the day if only your nights go below freezing). Make sure you keep the instruction sheet or refer to the Amazon listing photos because the temperature setting is just "P1-P9" and it's not clear just from looking at the product what that means. It's a scale from "hot" to "potentially boiling" and I haven't tried to see if I can boil water with it in my plastic bucket, but the disk does heat up pretty quickly. If there's one thing that could completely blow all the other heaters out of the water (no pun intended) it would be a thermostatic control that turns it on when the AIR temperature outside is below freezing and off when it's warmer. I'm pretty sure you're still expected to unplug this one or turn it off when it gets warm. For the price and simplicity it's a good solution. (P.S. mine did NOT shock me as someone else's review said it did, and I thoroughly handled it to feel the warmth. Did they put it inside the water bucket?) ... show more

I actually got this as an experiment to heat my indoor cats wet food and they work really well! High is burning hot but I assume for literal winter snow but the low setting is consistent enough to do what I want it to do
