There’s a few tools from Makita that no one seems to match. This tool is a joy. While 1/2” shanks are required when you need to chew up wood quickly this plunge base might grow your 1/4” shank collection. Deft machine that frequently runs with dust collection. Ten of these wouldn’t be nuts.

I talked myself out of a "full size" router in the name of saving some bucks and got this -- and have no regrets! The machine is well balanced and laid out, the controls are intuitive yet versatile, and the action is smooth and relatively quiet. I have the fixed base mounted to a DIY "router table" and use the plunge base for hand-held work which is generally convenient and versatile. Swapping the motor between bases is crazy easy, but there is one downside to this: The edge guide ONLY works on the fixed base. So if I want to use that I have to remove the fixed base from my table adapter, which isn't a big deal but it's less than convenient. The workaround is to add an adapter to the plunge base. Some have mentioned using the 194579-2 guide rails, which certainly do fit the router and the edge guide -- but are HUGE (they're meant for a fullsize router) and bulky which limits what you can do with them. So If you want fast changeovers, I suggest buying the (not included) 195564-8 adapter which fits the included plunge base, and then the edge adapter attaches to that. It's a little crummy of Makita to omit this adapter and kind of bury its existence in the manual, especially since it's not very expensive. BTW that adapter is not currently sold on Amazon, either. There is a time and place for larger routers, but this little guy is a beast, and the small size makes it both less intimidating for folks new to routers and more maneuverable for smaller projects -- or doing work-in-place. That makes it a great addition for DIYers who want routed features in their projects to take things to the next level of fit & finish. ... show more

I usually get geeked out about tools but I was especially geeked out about getting this router. First of all, when I was looking it was the best priced unit available. The day before I ordered the Bosch colt compact trimmer from my local Home improvement store. Both were out of stock but available for order so I rolled the dice. This was essentially the same price but included the plunge base so if money is no object, I might have gone with the DeWalt model. I honestly think the led lighting on the DeWalt makes it the winner especially with the flat sided, clear plastic bases. Easy to handle, but don't buy a dovetail jig thinking this thing will work on it. You don't have the option of using anything but the 1/4" collet and I guess it's elusive by design to ever posses a 3/8" collet to fit it. I don't know why they couldn't just include one. Probably my bad for expecting more from something that was made for a specific use. Good price and well made though. ... show more
