Description

Car Seat Headrest is the project of Seattle singersongwriter Will Toledo. With a vision that is both sweeping in scope and intimately personal, Car Seat Headrest embodies the DIY ethos at its best. Car Seat Headrest began in 2010 in Will’s hometown of Leesburg, Virginia. Needing a place of solitude (and soundproofing) where he could record his often frantic vocals undisturbed, a 17-year old Will set up shop in the family car (hence the name). From this humble origin, he has since built up a catalogue of staggering breadth and depth. In the last five years there have been over ten releases under the Car Seat Headrest name, one of which exceeds two hours in length. While the songs of Car Seat Headrest are often long and complex, they are anchored by irresistible melodies and a piercing emotional directness. Dispersed across the globe, the CSH fanbase is the definition of a cult following: several thousand internet denizens who deeply connect with Will’s intensely honest and unfiltered approach to writing and performing. With the release of Teens of Style, expect that number to greatly expand. This is Car Seat Headrest’s first release on Matador Records.

  • Catchy, Clever, Contagious
This one is an early contender for my album of the year. A very impressive collection of lo-fi pop-rock gems, instantly memorable songs bursting with hooks and energy. I've read a bit about this artist in the media and online, but there should be MUCH more attention paid to this album. In a deserving world, the genius behind Car Seat Headrest, Will Toledo, should be a mega-star. I would agree with some of the names being mentioned in comparison to the music of Car Seat Headrest, most especially Guided By Voices. Like GBV's Robert Pollard, Will Toledo has a knack for effortlessly writing songs with hooks and harmony, plus his lyrics are a delight too. Hey, how can you not grin at the mention of Michael Stipe being name-dropped in a song? Great stuff indeed! ... show more

  • Love it. This is one of the best albums ...
Love it. This is one of the best albums of the year for me. It's even better than the OMOM "Beneath the Sea"album, which was pretty darn good and which I said had no bad songs. There is a consistent feel to the whole album, even though it is mixed up with 2 min songs and then 7 min ones. It's a mixture of sixties sound with new age sound quality. Enjoyed all the tracks but the highlights are "times to die" and "maud gone" which are truly fabulous. Other excellent tracks are "the drum" and "los borrachos". Managed to listen to this for about 3 days straight and did not tire of it at all, just grows and grows on you. I hope this band has more in them like this. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • My favorite album of 2016
Though I initially found the low-tech, muffled quality of Will Toledo's vocals a little off-putting, there was no denying the beauty of the songs themselves. They are thoughtful, melodic, joyful, at times soaring, and genuine. This album is full of gems, my favorites being Strangers, The Drum and Times to Die. Indeed, I am so impressed with this album that I have purchased it for several of my friends as well. I haven't been this excited about an album in years! If you do give this a try and like it, Teens of Denial is equally great and, in my opinion, the vocals sound much better, having lost that low-tech, muffled vibe. ... show more

  • Holy Toledo
Holy Toledo! this is great stuff. It has a Jens Lekman vibe and a White Fence vibe but is pretty original as well. This guy has like 10 albums up on band camp and this I believe is a "greatest hits" from those, re-recorded and amazingly cleaned up some (not very much). If you like Pavement, or GBV, or even the late great Rain Parade, give this a try. ... show more

  • Best Quirky Brilliant Rock Band Since the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
My new favorite band. The genius songwriting, unpredictable time signatures, and fiery passionate musicianship sounds as fresh, welcome, and vital in 2017 as White Stripes in 2000. About twenty years apart but both landing at key times to jolt a boring and complacent American rock-and-roll landscape. ... show more

at a time when loops of synthetic and programmable sounds dominate the indie scene it's refreshing to hear such a talented young songwriter/guitarist release a rock record with that 90s, lo-fi, DIY aesthetic. At Toledo's best his band sounds like Pavement trying to sound like the Beach Boys. Maybe the best guitar rock record of 2015. ... show more
