  • I bought this used however the quality of it is like new. If you had told me it was ...
There are alot of conflicting reviews about this product. Reviews range form saying you need an ANT+ dongle, that it does work with zwift, that it does not work with zwift, that your blutooth device must be within 12 inches of this to work, and that you also need to purcahse a EU to US plug adaptor so I want to try to dispel some of this or at least provide you with my impressions. So first and foremost, this is based off of what arrived on my door step. I bought this used however the quality of it is like new. If you had told me it was new I'd have believed you. Original packaging etc, including warranty information. 1. My box came with a USA power cord. So if you live in the USA, and use plugs that we use in the USA, then this does/should come with a plug that works on USA power outlets. 2. This worked, via blutooth, with zwift right out of the box. I used an iphone SE. It found the trainer via blutooth within seconds and had no issues updating the firmware. 3. I used the Zwift mobile link to pair it via blutooth. Everything worked fine. I did not have any drop outs in connection. Zwift also controlled the resistance via bluetooth. There are reviews on here saying that you must have the ANT+ dongle for this to work. It is not true. If you plan on using blutooth, go for it. 4. I had the phone multiple feet away from the trainor at times and had no noticeable differnce in performance. I even kept it in my backpocket for a while as well as browsed the internet on it and sent text messages. No issues. 5. The reviews also talk about 2 flimsy plastic tabs that are easy to break. I dont know what tabs they are as mine has no such thing i could find. Either mines an updated model and they got rid of it or they reviewed the wrong product. 6. Set up is a little confusing. My best recommendation is to just throw the instructions away and go to youtube. Search for Shane Miller Tacx vortex review or Tacx vortex how to. You'll get great results walking you through it. Now that we have dispelled some myths, lets talk about the trainor! Its awesome. Feeling the resistance change when you go up and down is fantastic. It is a complete game changer. I do not race or compete but I like to bike enough that I do it year round. If your like me and on the fence on dropping $$$.$$ due to its more of a recreational hobby then my advice would be to a smart trainor out at a friends house or bike shop. If you like the experience, save up and wait for a great price. It is still not the same as being outside but this is as close as your going to get, but with 5,000 other people helping you along the way. TLDR: Works fine with blutooth right out of the box. Changes resistance just fine via Zwift/blutooth. Lots of fun ... show more

  • Very happy. Recommend to anybody (excluding super serious cyclists)
I wanted to try Zwift (virtual cycling sort-of game) and I purchased this Tacx Vortex to do Zwift. I got this, and the Garmin ANT dongle attached to my laptop, and the laptop is connected to my large TV in front of my bike set up with Vortex, and everything works perfectly. I read a lot of reviews on-line comparing Smart Trainers, and found that a lot of people much more knowledgeable than me think this is the sweet spot in terms of functions and the price among smart trainers in the market. And I agree with those people. Some people point out that this machine cannot simulate very steep slope (because the power to create countercyclical pressure to the tire is limited) but this is not a problem for me so far, because I am not that a serious cyclist. My competitive cyclist friend got this but quickly moved up, but I am totally fine with this. It is surprisingly compact, and the connection with ANT stick is so far very reliable; when there is a steep slope in the simulated course in Zwift, I can "feel the slope" within second (I read that the slight delay is due to Zwift's software, not the hardware). I am super happy about this product, and I recommend to anybody, except for super serious cyclist, who want to try Zwift or just want to train cycling indoors during winter. ... show more

  • Save your money, buy something better - An Update
UPDATE 2: This trainer has been nothing but a money pit. First I had to get a training tire because my regular tire wouldn't work. Then I had to get an ANT+ antennae because it wasn't connecting properly with Bluetooth. I had my rear tire trued and the tire checked to see if it would run on the roller by my well-established, well respected bike shop. No matter what I program I use (Rouvy or Zwift) this thing just ends its connection after 5 minutes. Zwift has been super responsive, suggesting a firmware update and some other things. The vendor also has been great. I'm hoping I can get this off the ground! I purchased this particular trainer because it was recommended as a beginner level device. The set-up instructions were so-so, but You Tube videos (from others, not the manufacturer) were helpful. I inadvertently disconnected the screw that controls the tire roller and wanted to make sure I was reconnecting it. I sent an email to Tacx support to make sure I had reconnected it right and got this response: "Welkom bij Tacx. U hoeft verder geen actie te ondernemen op deze mail." I'm guessing its Dutch and says something about email. I did get the trainer set up and the lever reconnected, which is supposed to work with regular bike tires. It does not. (I've ordered a trainer tire from Taxc to see if I can actually save using this thing.) Also, it appears the back tire must be 100 percent true for this thing to work. So I'm going to take the bike in, have the training tire put on and the tire trued and then see if this thing will work. It did connect well to Rouvy (an online program like Zwift). Also, the instructions say to inflate the tire to 100 psi, but the tire maximum is 65 psi. No information on why the over-inflation or whether you should over inflate. If you're a beginner like me, I think you'll be disappointed with this product. It's probably better to just purchase one with a cassette. I'll update the review once my bike shop has adjusted the back tire. UPDATE 1: The vendor was very helpful but it took Tacx almost two weeks to respond IN ENGLISH to my question. I have since taken the bike to my local bike shop, who installed a training tire on the bike. We thought this would fix the problem but it did not. They had to true my back wheel to make it work. So apparently if your bike is as much as a couple millimeters out of true, you're going to have trouble with this trainer. I was able to calibrate once the tire was fixed and I was able to connect to Rouvy (similar to Zwift). I have not tried the Tacx training programs yet. ... show more

  • Solid Trainer with Poor BT Range.
Setup is quick and easy. The provided Tacx Utility app is very basic, and clearly some kind of hybrid app. The bluetooth range of the unit isn't very good. Connecting to my AppleTV, which is only 15 ft away, is spotty. I've been using my phone instead, which works as excpeted. Otherwise the unit works really well. I recommend buying the blue Tacx tire as well. My only regret at this point is that I didn't spring for the Tacx Neo 2 Smart. ... show more
