  • Bits + methodology > fungus gnats
Summary: Success is possible, but the application of Bits needs to be tailored to the type of media treated. Background: I grow orchids indoors. Gnats were my #1 problem. Within a week of the first sighting of an adult, the infestation began. Withholding moisture in media is not an option for many orchid types. Eradicating gnats without poison required bagging of suspect plants and twice daily checking for newly emerged adults. The process of checking and squishing of gnats lasted weeks. Yes, a lot of work. Gnats eventually forced me to stop growing soil-based (non-orchid) houseplants. Here, too, withholding water was not viable. Layering sand atop the soil only redirected the gnats to access the soil via the pots' drain holes. Sticky traps were too passive to be effective, either as a sole or part of a combination solution. Three months ago, I took a chance on Bits. Success with epiphytic orchid media: This came rather easily, I'm pleased to say. Keeping in mind that the corn kernels are dusted with the Bti carrier powder, I applied enough product to insure that water-bottle spraying would disburse the powder evenly. When I had an active infestation, I applied Bits every 10 days. When I had not seen an adult in two weeks, I stopped application of Bits until the next adult was carried into the house through an open door. Flushing media of fertilizer salts once a month meant that Bti had also been flushed, so post-flush Bits application depended on whether or not I had an active infestation. No more bagging and tagging! Success with soil-based (non-orchid) media: I began treating my newly-acquired plants at the same time as my orchids. However, Bits was not effective, even with more frequent application. Stuffing Bits into drain holes (after confirming that the adults were emerging from there) didn't help. Worse, the corn kernels began to mold. While that might make them the perfect kill bait, the mold was not visually appealing. I called Summit. I suggested to Sam that Summit dispense with the corn and repackage the product as simply a powder. He revealed that they are in the process of certifying with the EPA that form factor, with a market release in 2020. In the meantime, he suggested that I soak two TB of product in one G of water for 10 minutes and then apply the liquid once a week for three weeks. After a trial of that suggestion didn't produce a better result, I put thought into why Bits works with orchid media but not with soil. It's a matter of penetration. Because the Bti is inert, it is passively moved through media. Orchid media is very porous, and thus the water carries the Bti thoroughly. Soil, however, is not nearly as porous, so the top layer appears to block the Bti from being carried deeply enough to reach where the gnat larvae feed. With that in mind, I removed the top half-inch of soil, put down a layer of Bits, and then covered that layer with the soil. I concurrently reduced watering to minimize moisture at the drain holes. Well, it's been about a month with no infestation! That's enough time for the occasional gnat coming in from the outside to have caused an infestation. What a revelation! A final nugget: Sam @Summit explained that the reason Bti products are so frighteningly labeled is that they are marketed as insecticides. This EPA labeling requirement gives no break to organic-use products like this innocuous-to-all-but-the-dipterans Bits. ... show more

  • Great against mosquitoes and fungus gnats
I bought this product for 2 reasons: 1. I overwinter nearly 50 tender plants in our house every year. Many of these plants are kept outdoors during summer, and this year they picked up some pests. Sadly, it took me too long to find this product and I lost some precious plants to those annoying little gnats that infest the soil. But within a few weeks of treating with mosquito bits, I haven't seen any gnats at all. Yay! That said, I imagine this will be a annual battle from now on, but at least now I have a solution to kill the bugs before they can do much damage. 2. I live in Michigan, neatly sandwiched between two marshes. And the past few summers have been brutal for mosquitoes. Anyone who has even visited this region in summer knows that skeeters are our unofficial state bird. I have used products based on BTI before, but none were as flexible as this product. Basically, if I have a space that stays damp (like the saucer underneath some of my plants, or the Kratky hydroponics we use), this product works fast and is effective at keeping larva from turning into blood-sucking nightmare creatures. A huge bonus is that the active ingredient is harmless to humans, pets, amphibians/fish (our garden pond is full of frogs and fish), and birds in the bird bath. Seriously, how did I live without this product?!?! The only downfall is the little corn bits (or whatever organic matter houses the dormant BTI) will rot and get moldy if its left wet. So you have to soak and strain the bits or risk your plants health in a different way. But if that's the only pitfall, it ranks as a far lesser annoyance than mosquito bites or dead Lemon Verbena plants. TLDR: If you have a mosquito or fungus gnat issue, this stuff is invaluable. ... show more

  • Works great
I was having an issue with fungus gnats bad. It was very annoying. Then I added the mosquito bits to the soil of my plants that seemed to constantly targeted by these pains in the butt. And now I don’t see any. Next time I’ll soak them in water. Because I did notice a bit of white fuzzy stuff covering the dirt and bits. Looks gross but I’m satisfied with no gnats and it’s not harming my plants ... show more

  • Doing its job.
I had a terrible fruit fly infestation in my house. The little buggers were in all my plants. I have used this solution twice now and the infestation is almost gone. Its very easy to use too.

  • Seems to be working... slowly
Somehow fungus gnats got a stronghold in my indoor potted plants. They fly right in your face and are a nuisance. I got these Mosquito Bits to kill the maggots in the soil and these Garsum Fruit Fly Sticky Traps for the adults. It seems to be working. In just a couple days, the stick traps already have 20+ flies on them. That's 20+ adults flies that will not lay eggs. The Mosquito Bits though -- they recommend 4 tablespoons in 1 gal. water for 3 weeks. I water once a week and it's been three applications now. I still have flies, so I'm not sure if the BT in these Mosquito bits is working or not. The bits in the watering container clog up the spout when watering. I'm not sure if the idea is to let them come out onto the soil or if there's something on them that mixes with the water and they get thrown away after use? I'm not sure what the "bits" are made of, but they don't dissolve and get moldy on the soil surface. ... show more
