  • Better result when following instructions
Style: 130 Clear Water Bales, 2-Pack
The breakdown of barley straw in your pond water creates Hydrogen Peroxide which inhibits algae growth. You should not expect green water to clear overnight (but you already know this). H2O2 is only produced when the straw is rotting under well-oxygenated conditions and is near the surface of the water to properly mix with sunlight and dissolved oxygen, otherwise it sinks to the bottom and rots. Hydrogen peroxide in low concentrations such as this has no negative effects either on pond plants or on invertebrates and fish. Once barley straw has become active the time it takes to become effective varies with the type of algae. It will work faster on green water algae than mat or string algae, but still should take a month or so. I know you do not want to wait, but now you know how to keep it clear naturally and will love watching your fish. (As a disclaimer, this is what I researched and it has worked for me for 2 years. ... show more

  • and hoped for the best. At first
Style: 130 Clear Water Bales, 2-Pack
I have a smal/medium on the deck pond. Algae was a constant problem. We have several fish, so we couldn't use standard algae treatment. I found these in my research for healthy pond algae remedies. I put one in the waterfall reservoir, and hoped for the best. At first, the algae seemed to get worse. However, I left it in because the instructions say it takes several weeks to work. They were right! After 2 weeks the pond started to clear. Now, 4 weeks later, the pond is crystal clear. Not only that... the algae on the bottom rocks is also starting to break up. I highly recommend this product! We are happy to be able to see our fish! ... show more

  • Works great on green water algae
Style: 130 Clear Water Bales, 2-Pack
I recently bought a house with a 125 gallon koi pond, which is in full sun all day long. When we moved in, the water was completely opaque with green water algae. For an entire month, I have tried daily filter cleaning, algaecide, barley pond water clarifier, and water changes. I eventually tried replacing my filter's foam layer with quilt batting, and that helped, but the water was still green. As a last resort, I got this barley straw. Since my pond is only 125 gallons, I measured out about 1/8 of one bale, put it in an old stocking & just let it float in the water. Within 3 days, the water was completely crystal clear! I was amazed! As per the instructions, when the bale starts to sink, I pull it out of the water & let it dry for 24 hours. Then I put it back in the next morning. The instructions do say that this can take up to one month to work, and I think that for my pond, cleaning the filter daily, adding quilt batting to my filter, and doing the water changes helped get the water clear faster. I don't know how long it would have taken the barley straw to work if I hadn't been doing those other things. But it did work like a charm. I am thrilled. ... show more

  • Wow, this really works!
Style: 130 Clear Water Bales, 2-Pack
We have a new pond this summer and it gets about 9 hours of full sunlight. We got algae issues immediately. We knew it would take a while for the pond plants to grow and shade the water but it might take a long time. We used API Pond Algaefix (about half a cup) every 4-5 days to keep it from turning into complete pea soup. It would work a bit, but never get crystal clear which we were okay with. But every time we used it, some of the bigger fish we had (we inherited some 5 inch koi from friends) would look like they were in a coma for a day. They'd recover, but it didn't feel good to use a algae killer like that. Hence the search for an algae fixer that wasn't toxic to our fish. After reading, we decided to use this. It seemed like it would take up to a month for the barley straw to break down and release whatever miracle algae inhibiting chemicals. We also bought some Crystal Clear barley extract to jump start the process. So here's what happened. On day one, we added the two barley straw bundles to the top of our little waterfall. We added 1/4 cup of API Algaefix (because we figured there was NO way the barley would work that fast), plus about 3/4 cup of the Crystal Clear Barley extract. The pond was pretty cloudy. We couldnt' see the bottom (about 2 feet deep in some places). Day two: Pretty clear. Like, better than when we used the API Algaefix alone. We figured we're not sure what really worked, but hey, it worked, and the fish were swimming around looking very good. No coma fish. Day three-seven (it's been one week). Crystal clear. LIke, mountain stream picturesque crystal clear. There is NO way this sustained clarity has anything to do with the Algaefix or even the barley extract. WE can only think it's from the barley straw. It's amazing. The plants look great. The fish are healthy and getting fatter by the day. (We only feed them about once a week--most of the time they forage on their own and do great). The only caveat: we used to have water bugs and other water surface insects. We haven't seen a single once since the barley went in. No explanation for that. Weird. We have lots of dragonflies and they seem fine. All in all, SUCH an amazing product. We are so happy we did a little research and found this. No more algaecide! No more waiting for the pond plants to grow in. I'm shocked that it worked so fast and it's still going so great! ... show more

  • This is a MUST HAVE for any Koi pond owner!
Style: 130 Clear Water Bales, 2-Pack
It just simply WORKS! I have a 660 gallon cattle watering tank we made into a Koi pond on my front patio with about a 200 gallon of bio filter made from 55 gallon barrels. I tried chemicals, and had limited success. I dropped this into my filter unit where there is a lot of oxygenated flow and within just a few days it made it so I could see the bottom again. My Koi are happy! A pair of these last me about 4 months. THIS is a MUST HAVE for a heavily loaded tank in full sun that breeds algae like crazy... Just drop it in there and let it get wet in a high flow area and it will go right to work. No more chemicals, no more mess. BP ... show more

  • They really work!
Style: 130 Clear Water Bales, 2-Pack
Really surprised they work!!!! I have a small pond with goldfish, waterfall, and 2 dogs that frequently dip in! The pond is in direct sunlight most of the day, so I was struggling with keeping the algae away. I was using beneficial bacteria, and it just didn't work. I needed something that would keep the pond clean, but also safe for my goldfish and dogs. I was skeptical that these would work, but for the price I decided to give it a go. Yes, it took about 4-6 weeks, but now for several weeks I've been able to see the bottom of the pond for the first time in years, the goldfish are vibrant and swimming with energy!!! ... show more
