  • Works slowly with other methods
Style: 130 Clear Water Bales, 2-Pack
Barley is a natural, slow pond water clarifier but is not a standalone. Each pond is different with different conditions: size, filtration, fish-no fish, amount they are fed, weather conditions (shade-sun, amount of rainfall), water quality, plants-no plants, frequency of draining and cleaning, etc... Sooner than later, every pond becomes a labor of love, especially when the lives of fish are involved. We've used these barley bales for more than a decade, one every 6 months for a 650-gallon pond with koi. We test our water quality monthly to keep the fish happy and healthy, also using other standard products in conjunction with the bales: bacteria boosts, algaecide sparingly, phosphate binders, some pond salt, better living through chemistry water quality adjusters to keep a balanced PH, N02, KH/GH, ammonia, saline. The barley acts as a slow, steady water clarifier but is not a one-stop-shopping water quality agent by any means...if you care about your fish. Also, a new pond or severe water changes often create an environment for "green water" that resembles an algae bloom but isn't. Those are different water conditions, requiring different interventions: for green water, double up on the bacteria powder (an algaecide is all but useless), while a true algae problem can quickly be toned down with any number of common algaecides + these barley bales. ... show more

  • Water is clear but now orange/rust color water
Style: 130 Clear Water Bales, 2-Pack
I have a 200 gallon pond, preformed black plastic molded liner. I have a pump waterfall attached to a flat Tetra filter with a combo of green (big holes) and white (fine like cotton batting made for pond filters) as the media inside. It I have a netting covering the pond to keep the leaves out. Pond is on 50/50 sun/shade throughout the day, each part getting some sun & some shade while the sun moves through the sky. I had been having problems with smelly, green water and was looking for a safe, natural way to control the algae and muck at the bottom when I came across these barley bales. I received them 10 days ago and used one. I tied it with a plastic zip tie to keep it from sinking and put it next to the water fall to make sure plenty of oxygen exchange is going on. This is also the pump, so it's the clean water that just came through the filter. 24 hours later, the water looked 50% clearer, but was developing an orange tint. A week later, the water is much clearer but looks like a retaining pond full of rusty pipes. The fish seem to be OK so far, but I don't think this is normal as no one else has mentioned this and none of the photos shared by other users show orange water ponds. I searched the reason for orange pond water and it said it's from tannins that can be released from decompensation of leaves. But I don't have leaves in my pond, they're stopped by the net and cleared off each day. I use a swimming pool skimmer net to remove any other debris out of the water, so my hypotheses is the orange/rust color of the water directly correlate to when I added the barley bale. I'll be happy to update this review if I receive a response from the company or a pond expert who might give me a different reason for this. Pros: The amount of barley straw received is a great deal for the price. In small ponds, these 2 bales could last you a year. ... show more

  • It seemed like a good idea
Style: 130 Clear Water Bales, 2-Pack
I am certain that it would work just fine IF NOT for RACCOONS! These little critters love to tear the bundles to shreds, scattering the pieces around the pond and surrounding yard. Oh well.. nature.

  • Knowing how many I need for my pond.
Style: 130 Clear Water Bales, 2-Pack
Based on what I read after receiving the package, my pond will require several more sets to properly serve their purpose. I will be placing an additional order in the next few days.

  • One word, Astonished! Worked great!
Style: 130 Clear Water Bales, 2-Pack
I’m impressed at how well this worked! I had back and forth expectations about this Barley Straw treatment. From reviews, to videos, to articles, my expectations varied. Because, people said it worked, people said it didn’t work, people also said it kind of did and didn’t work! WELL, it worked very well for us!! Our pond is a preformed 50gallon from Menards. It’s has an upper level that’s about 6-8 ins under water and lower level that is about 15in +/- under water. We could barely see the bottom of the upper level. And nothing in the 15in area. Algae was so bad because of the sun and heat that I had to find a solution. A safe solution! I didn’t want to use an algicide, because I tired it and it killed our fish, and I heard plenty of other horror stories of people loosing their fish when using that sort of water treatment. So, to start off, I emptied the pond 80-90%. Filled it with new water, which helped clear is up. Let’s say it went from 90% algae to about 20%. I didn’t have the barley straw yet, so this was just a temporary solution to our problem. Algae came back, but was only about 50-60%. I added the barley straw, kept a small umbrella over the pond for the first week (just to avoid any more growth), and hoped for the best. To my surprise and astonishment, the pond is basically crystal clear! At about 10%. All clear except for a healthy amount of algae and other debris in the water (plant, sand, dirt, fish waste, etc) From what I read, it should have taken at least 2 weeks to a month for this to work, but, it worked in 7 days! I cut the barley stray bald in two, because we didn’t need the whole bale for our pond. I laced the opening tight with fishing string, and strung it up next to/under the waterfall, which is why I think it started working quickly. The algae running through the pump and over the waterfall not only filtered through the straw, it started decomposing faster. I removed the umbrella and believe the algae will stay away. Take your time, use shade to prevent more algae build up so the barley straw can work it’s magic! ... show more
