I bought this starter because I did not want to pay the high price for a new Briggs and Stratton one. Bolted right up to my Briggs and Stratton 12HP I/C engine on my 1990 Snapper Rear Engine. Turned the key and it fired right up. The biggest complaint people have about this product is that the gear is made of plastic. Briggs and Stratton has a replacement for about $7.99. NOT A BIG DEAL. If you have a metal one on your original, just do the swap. The original one on my lawn mower had a plastic one on it. The replacement one that Briggs makes also has a plastic gear. So do not worry about the fact it has a plastic gear since it is replaceable. ... show more

Installed this on a 12 hp briggs lawn tractor. The mounting bracket was not as thick as the stock one so the gear mesh wasnt quite right. Had to use two shims to get the correct spacing. This starter has been working great for two months now. For a "factory" starter it would have been about $100, this was a great alternative. ... show more

I love the fact that it's a Briggs product, as I have much respect for the brand. Our tractor started right up on the first try after tmy husband installed the part! This is the exact part I could get at a lawn mower repair shop, but much cheaper!

I installed it on a 14 HP but fit fine. It does look lighter duty than what was on it but starts the engine and did not cost half of a B.S. starter.

    • Burned it up
Turns out the compression relief on the B&S was not working properly and this starter burned up after two tries. Went back to the original "slow" starter for the rest of the life of the mower.

This starter was identical in dimensions to the original starter, so it was easy to install. No idea as to the longevity. So far it starts the 14.5 HP Briggs engine on my mower just fine. No complaints.
