  • Perfect in every way
Everyone who enjoys baking--especially if you're a busy mom, or just busy in general--needs to buy this book. These recipes are really well designed, coming together quickly (no special equipment required!), being very easy to execute, and tasting delicious. Also, I rarely come across a cook book where nearly every recipe looks appealing to me. So far, I've only made three different cakes from this book, but every one of them has been incredibly delicious (browned butter, pecan, and white chocolate cake (tastes a lot like my favorite donut from when I was a kid), cocoa yogurt cake (to which I added peppermint flavor; and wow! Possibly the best chocolate cake I've ever tasted!), and the coconut lime cake). I love that there are variations offered for each recipe, as well as (optional) frostings and glazes (which so far I have not made). The only thing is that I recommend doubling the recipes to get a good amount that will last for a while, especially if you you're not just baking for yourself. I also prefer to substitute the regular flour for oatmeal flour to make the cakes a little healthier, and I've found that to work extremely well--it gives the cakes a really pleasant, soft texture. ... show more

  • Unfussy and lovely bakes!
Yossy's entire philosophy of unfussy bakes resonates deeply. Her recipes are approachable all while having just a touch of ~*pizazz*~. I've baked my way through so many cakes and none of them have missed! Whether it's zhuzhing up a strawberry cake with sumac, or a peanut butter cake with a salty caramel frosting, she really understands flavor combinations and how to keep things simple while delivering a 'wow' factor.   • Have made several recipes. Only 1 really missed the mark
The oatmeal chocolate chip cake came out too wet and oily. I weighed all my ingredients to a T and it just didn’t work. However, some of these recipes are pure gold. Really quick to make and fun treats for my small family. The pineapple upside down cake is my favorite.

We've already made 4 cakes from this book, and I only got it a month ago. It's exactly as advertised - low-fuss cakes that you can make with stuff you probably have around. The portioning is nice for people who aren't hosting a party, but are also not against some breakfast cake sometimes. The instructions are clear and the substitution suggestions make a ton of sense. Read if: You want something that is almost as simple as a box cake, but much tastier. Skip if: You derive satisfaction from getting Cooks Illustrated recipes to turn out right. ... show more

  • Really imaginative assortment of cakes
This book was originally chosen for my Library’s cooking club and I enjoyed it so much I bought it and LOVE it! Recipes seem well written and complete…unlike some cookbooks who seem not to have been double checked! My go to dessert cookbook!
