Description

IACP COOKBOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNER • In the first cookbook by a Black pitmaster, James Beard Award–winning chef Rodney Scott celebrates an incredible culinary legacy through his life story, family traditions, and unmatched dedication to his craft. “BBQ is such an important part of African American history, and no one is better at BBQ than Rodney.”—Marcus Samuelsson, chef and restaurateur ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time Out, Food52, Taste of Home, Garden & Gun, Epicurious, Vice, Salon, Southern Living, Wired, Library Journal Rodney Scott was born with barbecue in his blood. He cooked his first whole hog, a specialty of South Carolina barbecue, when he was just eleven years old. At the time, he was cooking at Scott's Bar-B-Q, his family's barbecue spot in Hemingway, South Carolina. Now, four decades later, he owns one of the country's most awarded and talked-about barbecue joints, Rodney Scott's Whole Hog BBQ in Charleston. In this cookbook, co-written by award-winning writer Lolis Eric Elie, Rodney spills what makes his pit-smoked turkey, barbecued spare ribs, smoked chicken wings, hush puppies, Ella's Banana Puddin', and award-winning whole hog so special. Moreover, his recipes make it possible to achieve these special flavors yourself, whether you're a barbecue pro or a novice. From the ins and outs of building your own pit to poignant essays on South Carolinian foodways and traditions, this stunningly photographed cookbook is the ultimate barbecue reference. It is also a powerful work of storytelling. In this modern American success story, Rodney details how he made his way from the small town where he worked for his father in the tobacco fields and in the smokehouse, to the sacrifices he made to grow his family's business, and the tough decisions he made to venture out on his own in Charleston. Rodney Scott's World of BBQ is an uplifting story that speaks to how hope, hard work, and a whole lot of optimism built a rich celebration of his heritage—and of unforgettable barbecue. Read more

  • Nice
Bought this as a father's day present. The book is exactly as advertised. Has recipes for everything southern and grilling. My fiance loved it, and I can't wait until he starts up the grill. Definitely recommend, for anyone who loves southern food and grilling.

  • Found the Scott family in 2015 on YT. His dad's ingenuity and his story are well worth the price!!
The moment I saw the burn barrel with the old car axles and his dad's pit in the old restaurant in Hemingway, I was so impressed and inspired by the ingenuity and creativity. I was equally impressed by Rodney's friendliness and passionate approach for his work. I saw him out in the community with chainsaws and as someone who loves to heat and cook with wood, I appreciated the work ethic. After reading reviews here, hearing about the business changes, and being a little nosy, I had to find out what happened. I won't spoil the story, but I can see that his dad saw business as survival. Rodney saw what was possible and how to make it thrive. As a dad and business owner, I would hope that I would be thrilled to see one of my children take what I started (my creation and inspiration) and take it up a notch. Why not! It's obvious that this is what Rodney desired. His dad owed a LOT to him for putting in the hours since he was a kid yet the author does not have an entitled attitude. This is what makes him a great character. I believe through the struggle of his childhood, he gained so much more than the kids who were just out playing ball or getting into trouble. I am glad to see there were some good times with his father during his upbringing. It's too bad that this relationship didn't end on a happy note. But... we don't live in a perfect world. I like how his hometown people offer him advice as they see him succeed. One person he labels as old fashioned (I'm younger than Rodney by 10 years or so but agree with the person) said just remember to put the Lord first. In a pull yourself up by your own bootstraps secular world, this just sounds like noise. But... it couldn't be more true. Matthew 6:33 says, "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all this things will be added to you". Words to live by. A person can gain the whole world, but in the end it just rusts and eventually we'll all be dust again. What's eternal is what counts. Great read, I appreciate him as much as I did when I first found him years ago. I wish I had time to travel to S.C. to taste his work in person. For now Arthur Bryants, Gates, 17th Street and a few other regional places (and my own wood stove) are what I have (which ain't bad!!). Some day I hope to meet Rodney. Seems like a great guy! ... show more

  • Country BBQ done right!
Love this BBQ cookbook . Love the story behind the chef’s heritage and passion for cooking BBQ. I found out from a friend about your Cookbook. He noticed a familiar picture in the book and shared. It was a picture of my Daddy’s refurbished Country Farmall tractors and parts. He is 82 years young and this really made him smile. I purchase several Cookbooks to surprise family members and they love the recipes. I enjoyed your story about Jesus Tears. Keep BBGing♥️ ... show more

  • Rodney is a good man who knows how it’s done.
I am a huge fan of Rodney Scott. He is a hard working man who knows how to do it properly. I wish he would open a restaurant in Little Rock. There used to be great barbecue there back in the 60s and 70s but not as much now. I miss The Shack. So Rodney would be so welcome! So many of my side recipes are so much like his. I know it would be great! ... show more
