I was worried based on some reviews. Yes, these are made in China. I don't know how they compare to your "mother's Pimpernel", but they are thick, heavy and flawlessly beautiful! I can't speak to durability since I've only used once, but the quality exceeded my expectations.

Classic and emerald green, these placemats are justifiably an admired Pimpernel product. They are not, however, your grandmother’s Pimpernel. I did not rate durability or sturdiness for the mats because they are brand new. Experience with current exemplars of the brand is not entirely encouraging: chips, peels, and stains mar surfaces. I sigh for two sets of UK-made Pimpernel I no longer own. Years into service they were still pristine; in a fit of generosity I gave them away before an overseas move. But hey! These jewel greens are new and attractive. Maybe the weaknesses have been overcome? I look forward to setting a table. At the same time I regret that Pimpernel placemats now arrive in only half a box. Covering the top half with disposable plastic is a rather mean cost-cutter and not a contribution to bruise-free storage. ... show more

One placemat has some type of an inch long mark on it toward the side (it was the one on top in the box) the mark doesn’t come off so I am disappointed - the other three are ok.

Love these placemats! Pimpernel placemats have been around forever. They are great for casual dining and really protect the surface beneath them since they are solid and have a cork backing. They are “hardshell”, last for years and you’ll most likely replace them only because you want a new pattern or color. ... show more
