These placemats are very sturdy. What nice and very important is that the edges are finished with some kind of material/seal - this, hopefully, would prevent the layers of placemats from becoming separated and curling up too soon. The surface is smooth but not very slippery, easy to wipe and clean. These placemats were not the lowest-price option (there are cheaper ones available) but appear to be of a good/better quality. Only have them for 3 weeks now but so far so good. Seems to be much higher quality than the standard junk mats, the cheapo things that one would get at discount stores.
