  • Sturdy frames for creating picture groupings
Color: Distressed White Size: 4x6 inch
I have been struggling recently to figure out how to display cherished photos of my family. I have decades of photos to display and can't bring myself to take one down to make room for another, lol. I have an eclectic collection of old frames that have been found at garage sales, thrift stores and such. Now that I have a granddaughter, I'm overhauling my wall spaces to create a more deliberate display. I want frames that are identical, so that the focus is on the subject of the photos and not the frames. But I don't simple frames with cheap materials and even cheaper aesthetics. I live in the country and have a farmhouse decor that is authentic and developed over decades of practical decor choices. But I appreciate the style stamp that has been put on items marketed as "farmhouse". I've been looking for a few years for a collection of frames that would suit my purposes. As a professional photojournalist, my priority has always been to capture the moment and personalities of the subjects in the photos. I want frames that compliment the photos but don't detract from them. These frames are it. They are identical, so they can be grouped together to create stories. They are slightly distressed, so they can blend in and not outshine. They are sturdy frames. The frames are not wood but a compressed wood product ("sawdust compressed with super glue" is how my husband describes it.) I'm cool with that, lol. There was no chemical smell or off-gas when I unpacked. But I do unpack all items in the garage and let them sit a few days to air them out. The frames were not warped or wobbly. They are sturdy. The hangers are secure, with metal mechanisms applied to allow for either horizontal or vertical use. They also include pull-out easle backs to allow for standing if you choose not to hang on the wall. The backing is a nice sturdy pressed board, not a cheap and flimsy cardboard that warps and provides NOT support. These provide support and protection for the photos inserted and don't slip out. The frame inserts are not glass - THANK YOU! I have developed a disdain for glass frame inserts over the years. They add weight and are a pain in the backside if you have to store a frame. And if they fall to the floor? Forget it. You have slivers and shards of glass you'll be finding with your bare feet for months. The acrylic insert is thick enough and clear enough to serve the purpose of protecting the photo. They are easy to use and look great on the wall. ... show more

  • Yup, they're frames. For pictures.

Gather 'round, Gentle Readers, and let me tell you a tale of the Before Times. It's a story of a bygone age, when "camera" meant something other than a lump sticking out of the back of your smartphone, and gratification was about as far from instant as it's possible to be. In those days of yore, photography was a process as fiddly as it was baroque. It was about chemistry, not pixels, and the making of a photograph relied as much on prayer and hope as on clicking buttons. You see, back then, you made a photograph by loading a spool of photosensitive plastic into your camera, dialing in a lot of arcane and occult adjustments, pressing a button, and sending off a prayer to the gods of art and chemistry. If you were very lucky, and you did everything right, days or weeks later you'd "develop" your "film," the doing of which involved a large assortment of smelly, poisonous, and/or generally unpleasant chemicals. If all went well, you'd end up with a long strip of plastic with little wee images on it, in reverse. You'd then, in a darkened room, shine light through this strip of plastic onto a sheet of paper that dare not see the burning midday sun. More smelly and unpleasant chemicals later, you might, if everything went extraordinarily well, end up, through various alchemical transmutations, a photograph. Back in those days, I was a dedicated amateur photographer—dedicated enough, anyway, to have a darkroom in my house. And often, through alchemy and magical light, I would end up with photos, black and white generally as I wasn't set up for color, that I could hang on my wall. Those days are long past, and the photos, thousands of them, have languished in a box in the attic. Until now. This bundle of picture frames spares no expense in sparing no expense. They're quite thin, and the plexiglas covers are paper-thin. But they do the job admirably. I think the distressed wood-and-white is quite fetching with black and white photos, and I'm gratified to breathe new life into images that have sat forlorn in a box for much too long. ... show more
