  • So far, so good!
Color: BLACK
I have had a terrible time finding a monochrome laser printer that would replace the Brother inkjet that I loathe for its use of color ink to print monochrome. I'm tired of HP and Brother and their business practices. I couldn't find a decent big-name printer that checked all the boxes--the Canon I tried to replace the Brother with didn't have wi-fi, something I though was standard in all home printers these days. So I took a chance with this brand which I'd never heard of before seeing it on Amazon. It prints crisply and quickly. It wakes from sleep mode without me having to run into the other room to press a button to wake it up. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is that the setup was really difficult. I have an Ubuntu Linux system as I ditched Windows right before 11 dropped. This printer was touted as working with Linux. So when it arrived last night I was looking forward to setting it up. And that's where the problem came in. It is not intuitive at all, and the user manual said nothing about Linux setup. The USB cable that came with the machine was defective or the port for it was as my computer could not detect it and I couldn't use their preferred one touch method to set it up. I was getting really frustrated as none of the methods listed in the manual worked. Supposedly you have to use a wired connection to set the thing up but it was not working at all. So I started looking online and found a manual that was generic for all Pantum laser printers, that listed the steps I needed to set up the driver on Linux. I was able to get the driver installed after all and check for that. But then it wouldn't detect wi-fi and since the USB cable method didn't work I thought I was going to have to send the thing back. Fortunately in that same generic manual there was a method for setting up wi-fi without the cable and it worked perfectly! If I'd known about that from the included manual I would have had this thing set up in ten or fifteen minutes tops. Basically, you have to go into the printer's system settings on the device itself to the WPS setting. Once you're there, you press the WPS button on your router and they take a minute or two to sync up. I didn't have to input the network key or anything, it worked flawlessly. Now the printer is set up in the office, my laptop is in the room I prefer working in, and I'm able to print crisp documents, super quickly. In that respect it's far superior to the name brand American corporate printers I've tried to make work. So if you're in the market for a new printer, this one is actually really good, so long as you can do a web search and find documentation other than what was included in the box. I can confirm it does work with Ubuntu 20.04. Hopefully this printer will work a good long time because I'm never buying a Brother or HP printer again. ... show more

  • Possible solution to "all printers suck."
Color: BLACK
Bought this to replace a 10-year-old HP all-in-1 that finally expired. Short story: this looks like it will work with our home Apple devices and on our Google mesh wifi network. But setup is not intuitive, and I can understand why buyers without some IT background have found it frustrating. At least 5% of the Amazon reviews about *every* printer I considered said something like the following, where "xxx" is a placeholder for all of the leading printer brands, including HP, Brother, Epson, Kyocera, and Lexmark: "I used to love <xxx>, but this printer is a useless soon-to-be birdhouse that <falls off my network | prints out of alignment | uses too much toner | jams all the time | is impossible to install and I have a PhD from MIT in computer engineering>. I called support and I was on hold for 3 weeks, so now I think that <xxx> is the worst company in the history of global commerce and I'll never buy another printer from them ever." So, since all printers are, apparently, garbage, I bought the cheapest monochrome laser all-in-1 I could find. The build quality of this Pantum, which cost $132, is no worse than the HP it replaced. There appear to be multiple options for replacement toner cartridges. The documentation, both included and what I could find online, is in broken English and not very helpful. I found that I had to download the driver software and connect to the printer with the included USB cable to join the printer to my wireless network, which is Google mesh wifi. Once I did that, Google wifi reported the IP address it had assigned to the printer and then I could browse to that IP to get to the printer's web interface. From there, it's possible to change the printer's admin password and make some other settings changes, too, but it does not appear that changing the printer's wifi connection is possible from the web interface; that requires the wireless configuration utility and a USB connection. The instructions for AirPrint printing were useless, because they require joining your device to the printer's built-in hotspot which will disconnect both your device's connection to your own wifi network and consequently your device's connection to the internet. But once I joined the printer to my wifi network as described above, AirPrint works perfectly, at least so far. In the web interface, I disabled the printer's "wireless hotspot" by clicking "close" (yes, the grammar in the firmware is weird, too). If this printer works for a couple of years, after which I hope the major manufacturers stop trying to rip consumers' off with various "express" toner and ink scams, I'll be happy. ... show more

  • Fast, but issues
Color: BLACK
Printer and copier section work very well....quite pleased. The scanner, however has issues...one day it works fine, the next it just seems to get locked up for some reason, and even rebooting the PC and/or the printer doesn't shake it loose. I guess for the cost, if only using the print function, it's a good value. Typical laser printer...it uses a lot of power....causing lights in the room on the same circuit to flicker when used. The sleep mode comes on too fast for my liking, however....but overall decent. ... show more
