  • You get what you pay for. Great quality!
Color: Weathering - Grays, Grime & Soot
I needed this set for weathering my steam locomotives. I have one of the other sets and have gotten excellent results. If you're getting into weathering or are looking for other companies, this is one of them.

  • Best powdered material for weathering so far.
Color: Weathering - Grays, Grime & Soot
I like these pastels, better than any other I have for adding a little weathering to areas that need it. The material sticks good any where you place it. I have not had a need to remove it, so I can't comment on that, but you can if needed. I also have several other brands of powdered chalks, Dr. Ben's, artists pastels like Rembrandt and Sennelier Soft Pastels and a few others that I use a lot, but none stick on and weather as instantly as these PanPastel's do. However, the Sennelier and Rembrandt I use with alcohol, and they act more like a paint when doing it with this method, and is a great weathering technique (If you are familiar with Sierra West models, you know what I mean). There doesn't seem to be much pastel powder in the compartments, as they look maybe 1/4" deep(?), but this stuff doesn't need a lot to give you the effect you need. Consequently, they will last a very long time. And they are in the solid, not a loose powder, more like a woman's compact, if you've seen one. Also, at first, having all the 'removable' little pots in one large plastic case seemed a little weird at first, but I have grown to like it like this, as I can move around from pot to pot and easily mix any color I need on the part I am weathering with ease. But you can take them out and screw them into each other if needed. They come with one lid, so to store them any other way than in the plastic holder, you would either have to stack them or maybe purchase more lids. But this is just a small annoyance. I have two sets, the Rust/Earth colors and Grays/Grime/Soot, 7-Packs. For me, that is plenty, and I use the browns much more than the greys. I put off buying these for a long time due to the cost and that I had a lot of other weathering powders already, and yes, they are a little expensive. But I would recommend these to anyone who likes or needs to weather their models. I was lucky to have a gift certificate for the first set, so it didn't cost me much, but when I started using them, I didn't hesitate to get the second set. ... show more

  • Very impressed!
Color: Weathering - Grays, Grime & Soot
I got both this set, and the dirt/rust set for weathering model trains. Very impressive results, very quick and easy to use, and has plenty of product. It definitely goes on, and sticks better, than average big box store pastels. And, a lot less mess, as this product you so not have to grind/sand/scrape into a powder to use. One slight downside I found, the actual pastels do not have individual lids, only the center one does in each set, the rest have just the trays covering them. Not that big of an issue, until you, 1, ship it, and 2, try to store them differently. My painting/weathering kit box (I keep most often used colors and tools in a small tool box, back stock and less often used items in a larger tote box.) is not big enough to hold these inside the trays, so I will have to either, 1, keep these in a different location, 2, get a bigger storage option for my kit box, or 3, buy lids separately. And the no lids caused a slight problem in shipping, as my package had black "dust" everywhere, from that color "pastel powder cake" getting broken. This slight issue aside, very nice product, and, at least for me, well worth the price. I very highly recommend. ... show more

  • Great product
Color: Weathering - Grays, Grime & Soot
I read about this product in a recent issue of Model Railroader magazine. So did everyone else b/c when I tried to order it every merchant was sold out. I finally got it and it totally lives up to my expectations. Very easy to apply and control; produces a very pleasing effect. Downsides: It's expensive. The package contains a lot of product. Several lifetimes worth. The individual pans could be half the size and the retail price reduced somewhat. The prepackaged kits do not contain enough variety of color to allow the use of one kit for basic needs. This kit contains many subtly different shades of gray/black which a basic modeler may not have the need for, and yet it contains no rust-like colors which would be very useful in combination with a few shades of gray/black. If you know which colors to get you can buy them individually which is probably more cost-effective unless you want all of these colors at once. ... show more

  • Fixing will diminish effect
Color: Weathering - Grays, Grime & Soot
I use these for weathering in model railroading. Though I use a fixative that is specific for pastels (Blair Matte Spray Fix), the pastels will still be altered. The lighter you applied the pastel the more it will "disappear" when fixed so you may loose that beautiful subtle effect you had achieved. When weathering static structures (buildings) this is no problem and they do not have to be fixed. However on my engines and rolling stock that may be handled it may still be advisable to fix the pastel. (However you must admit - touching up pastel weathering is crazy easy) ... show more

  • Bought for the colors...kept them because they are cool to use!
Color: Weathering - Grays, Grime & Soot
I bought these for the colors offered and I wanted to try PanPastels for a picture I was making for a Christmas gift. I didn't realize they were for models...but they seemed to work well anyway!
