  • Exceeds my expectations
Color: Loch Blue Size: Medium/Large
Nothing negative to report other than saying I wish they had kept the side zipper access point.

  • Love this pack
Color: Picholine Green Size: Medium/Large
This is a great pack! Distribution of weight is great and it’s storage is impressive. love the frame and it’s comfortable. I’m 6’5 so I was worried about it’s more universal design fitting but it worked great. I also love that it compresses way down and can be used for a simple day hike without slack or extra size. Very nice mid size pack that easily fills the need for small day packs if you’d like. Hip Pockets are great, they increased the size to easily fit larger phones now. My only gripe is that the top pocket is messy. it’s huge and doesn’t snug down tightly to the top of the pack. This is because the inner mesh pocket for keys and a wallet in the way. So it ends up being a lot of wasted space hanging loosely atop your neatly, snug pack. Because that top pocket is so big and doesn’t snug down, unless you throw a raincoat or something in there too, anything you have in there will be very loose on the hike. I’m considering cutting the mesh divider out honestly. But that design flaw is the same with every Osprey hiking pack, this one just seemed more prevalent due to the nature of the compact and efficient size of this pack. ... show more

  • Nice job Osprey!! A lot of small (but important) improvements with the new version (2020)...
Color: Black Size: Medium/Large
I've had two previous generation Kestrels (both a 38 and a 48), and have loved them!! This new version of the 38 pack (2020) has a number of small, but important improvements: - First, the new version DOES still include the vertical side access zipper into the main pocket (I've read elsewhere that it doesn't). - The zippers have been improved -- with bigger pulls (that now you actually can get your finger thru!) and one size larger sliders on: sleeping bag compartment; main compartment side access; top outside pocket; both waist belt pockets. - The two waist belt pockets, in addition to having the bigger zippers, have been redesigned. This has made them MUCH easier to open/close/access than with the previous version of the Kestrel -- now the pockets open and close like budder!! - Personally, I don't like the new "daisy chain" attachment points on the front of the pack -- I prefer those of the previous generation Kestrel. That said, the new design, along with the new "straightjacket" compression strap feature, will make it easier to carry things like snowshoes on the back of the pack. - IMO they should not have changed the aux strap attachments on the top of the pack -- those found on the previous Kestrel were much more useful in practice (the new ones are 90 degrees off). - The front stash pocket is made of more durable material in the new version. The overall packbag material is different in the new version -- but I don't see it as being better or worse. All in all, I think Osprey really got it right with the new generation of the Kestrel 38. Nice job, Osprey!!! (Full disclosure -- I've been a long-time Osprey fan, and have owned -- and own -- many of their packs.) ... show more

  • Could be a lot better for the money
Color: Black Size: Medium/Large
I want to love this backpack but it has some flaws. It looks good and is fairly comfortable but it doenst have some of the basic functions that most backpacks do nowadays. There is practically no interior storage, no little side pockets or anything. Just an abyss to loose stuff in. The top “flap” has a couple pockets that work but there could be more. It seems to be fairly durable but that top flap has some weird elastic band around it that doesn’t seem like it belongs there, it certainly doesn’t improve ease of use. Lastly the waist strap buckle is meant to be lightweight or low profile or something but the way it’s designed, you can’t put a bear spray on it and expect it to stay there. It’s hard to describe but typically a bear apart would get caught on the buckle and it wouldn’t slide off when you take the backpack off, but because these buckles don’t have a catch, the bear spray will remove itself whenever the buckle isn’t connected. I haven't last a bear spray yet but I bet I will someday. If I get mauled by a bear because This backpack was incapable of having a bear spray attached to it, I’m not going to be happy. ... show more

  • A great all around pack for the Camino de Santiago
Color: Black Size: Medium/Large
I am using this pack on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Osprey packs are commonplace on the Camino and the Kestrel seems to be one of the most popular choices. Good sturdy pack although noticeably heavier than the Exos the extra weight translates into durability and ease of use. The shoulder straps and the rest of the suspension system work very well and are very comfortable. Like the attached rain cover and the colour matches the standard road vests in Spain so you can easily be identified in wet or misty weather - important when road-walking. The sleeping bag compartment is excellent and suits my sleep system very well. Makes it easy to pull out and lay claim to your bunk when you arrive in an albergue (hostel style accommodation) The option for carrying water bottles on a forward slant makes them easy to access and replace. Overall a great pack for the Camino. Osprey’s guarantee is absolutely stellar. ... show more

  • Great pack
Color: Picholine Green Size: Medium/Large
Did a 3 day 45 mile hike in smoky mountains. Great pack. Well balanced. Great access points. The integrated rain cover came in handy. The top pocket is larger than it appears. The trekking pole attachment was a great bonus. Have the Osprey Farpoint 40 also. Both great products.

  • Practical, rugged and very comfortable.
Color: Picholine Green Size: Medium/Large
Currently walking the Camino de Santiago from St Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela. Arrived in Burgos today Sep 19th. This backpack is amazing. It’s the perfect size for what I need on a long walk like this where you are not carrying camping gear. It is super comfortable, rugged and more than up to the task. The rain cover works well and kept my stuff dry throughout 3 days of heavy rain enroute. Will follow up with a full review once I have completed the Camino. • I got this for my brother, he loves it.
Color: Picholine Green Size: Medium/Large
My brother loves this pack. He goes hiking for a few days at a time and finds that it carries all his gear. Keep in mind it is not an ultralight pack, but will suit your needs well.
