  • Fun and Encouraging
Size: Game Style: Beginner Reader
We have long loved the Osmo products starting with my oldest who is now actually 11 and have been using it since then with my youngest, who just turned seven. This reading program is fantastic. I think the key thing for people to note is that you need a quiet environment as it’s going to work with the sound of your child’s voice. My son has been in speech therapy for quite a while and we’re now just able to use program. I don’t think it would have been able to understand the words with the pronunciation and enunciation that he had previously. The character in it - Oliver - is the cutest dog, and we all love watching him bring to life the stories as we read the pages aloud together. ... show more

  • Makes learning fun
Size: Game Style: Beginner Reader
My daughter had little interest in practicing reading. I saw this in a store so I did a little reading and found it on Amazon. It’s easy to set up and does make reading fun. The books are interactive - you follow along with a wand and it can hear your child reading and pronouncing words and has lots of encouragement. It also gives parents tips to helping their child learn. Overall, it is a great gift for early learners and kiddos just starting school. ... show more

  • Makes learning to read fun

Osmo is awesome. My kiddo likes it so it’s easier to get him to do it. He feels like he is playing instead of learning.

  • Doesn’t offer good correction for beginning readers
Size: Game Style: Advanced Reader
We are long-time Osmo users - we have used the Genius and some of the other games such as the Pizza Co., Food Truck, Detective Agency, and some workbooks. My son was ready for the advanced reader edition, so we ordered that version. Note that you need to order the starter kit version of this product if you don’t already have any other Osmo products. The starter set comes with a reflector you place on top of your tablet, and a base that it sits on up off of the floor. The product won’t work without the reflector. Also note that although most Osmo games have Kindle Fire versions, there are some issues that they’re working out with the Fire version, so this currently ONLY works for iPad. We had trouble getting the game working right from the start because the reflector didn’t seem to be recognized. We contacted customer support and they mailed a new reflector but also suggested putting a wooden pencil between the table and reflector and that completely solved our problem. The advanced readers are recommended for K -1 (ages 5-7), and assumes you already have some reading and are now starting to blend words. We assumed advanced would be more like grades 2-3 so this was too easy for my son, but honestly he loves the books. When setting this up, you can sign up for 4 new books every month, paying for it by the year, by 6 months, or do it month at a time. We chose not to get any more books since these are beneath his abilities. The concept is a good one that there is a feature to analyze your child’s reading to see if they are reading the words correctly. HOWEVER… the problem is that if the word is not said correctly, there is nothing in the app that will say the right word out loud, your child just doesn’t get the check mark that it’s correct. So they don’t really learn from it unless a parent is sitting right there with them working on it with them, which isn’t always practical. The games that come along with this are fun. Another thing my son likes is the “magic wand” which he plays with even when he doesn’t have it out with the Osmo (it only lights up when connected with the app though). All in all, this is one of the Osmo apps that I like less because of the subscription based service and because the app doesn’t do a great job at teaching new words. (Isn’t that the whole point?). For kids who already know how to read or have a parent with them all the time, this is fun. ... show more

  • God sent!
Size: Kit Style: Beginner Reader
My 6-year-old has ADHD and is struggling with reading, etc. I tried ABC Mouse with my oldest and wasn't a fan. This keeps her attention. She loves the wand. I love that it has items she can physically hold that help keep her focused. We also have many other kits from Osmo and she loves them all.

  • Wish it wasn’t a subscription service and costs a lot more to get the complete program…
Size: Game Style: Advanced Reader
They don’t include in the Amazon description that to get access to other levels’ books, you’ll have to sign up for a subscription. I wish you could just purchase all the levels at once or purchase whichever ones you needed here on Amazon. My kids nor I want to wait every month just to get 4 more books (another level), especially when there’s 18 levels. Each level is $25/month or $255 for a 1 year subscription option. That doesn’t even cover all 18 levels. This makes this item actually a lot more costly then you realize at first — at least $425 plus tax even if you get one month free. For this reason, and the fact you can’t just buy all the levels at once if you wanted to, we will probably be returning it. I have two kids on two different levels, what am I supposed to do with a subscription? Just make one kid wait 5 months later for his level? Also, I bought the “level 2” kit on Amazon, but when you scan the books into the Osmo app, you find out it’s actually level 5. I’m really quite annoyed that the actual costs or the fact that it is a subscription service only ( for the rest of the levels) is not included in this Amazon description. Now, I’ve introduced it to my kids, and now they will be disappointed. ... show more
