  • Works as intended
This is the first time I've ever tried to use a meat press, so I don't have much to compare to. However, I found the process simple and straight forward after watching some "how-to" videos. I used ground pork and added just salt and pepper. To be honest, it was gross. Most folks I've seen reported using chicken and other seasonings - so I'm not giving up. The meat was cooked just fine and the press worked as intended - the taste was just not great. I had no trouble at all getting the apparatus together with the spring and the lid. Everything fit togehter fine. My only tip would be to go ahead and thaw/ use 2 lbs of meat. I had only thawed one when starting the process, and saw the recommendation for 1.5-2 lbs on the directions. I thought my 1lb was fine as I didn't want to wait. What I found was that the meat thermometer didn't seem to go down far enough into the canister to penetrate deep enought to get an accurate reading. It ended up being cooked 100% so it was fine - but next time I plan to try 1.5 - 2 lb chicken and hope for something tastier! ... show more

  • This is a pretty cool tool
I really had no idea what to expect. I never made deli meat before. Mixed up some ham, bacon and cheddar, threw it in the pot, closed the lid, inserted the thermometer and into the pot of hot water it went. With a slow boil I only had to refill the water one time until I got to temperature. Pulling out the finished deli meat was a little challenge. A good part of the cheddar leaked out above the spring. Not all. I still had roughly 2/3 of the cheddar in the product. Once I got rid of the cheese that escaped, I ran some hot water over the can and out popped a 2 pound deli loaf. Really like this unit. Easy to use, easy to clean and I get deli meat that has no fillers. 5 star ... show more

  • Good concept
Great contempt because it does work, the thermometer is too short and that’s a problem, but I’ve had to throw away each patch because it tasted gamey or gross. I haven’t found any recipes to support this product. Don’t buy it.

  • Very happy with this
I watched Bobby Parish make homemade lunch meat and just had to try it, so I ordered this. I love that I can control the ingredients that go into our sandwich meat. I started by mixing (or squishing) together with my hands 1 pound of ground chicken, a little salt, onion and garlic powder. I oiled the inside of the press before sprinkling on it a few spices I had mixed together. Then I plopped the mixture inside the press, inserted the spring and tightened the cover. We boiled it for a couple of hours until the temp reached 170. After allowing it to cool for a short time on the counter, I set it in the fridge until the next day. The texture is a little different from commercially made lunch meat, which may be because I didn’t use fillers like carrageenan. (It reminded me a little of a specialty loaf meat you may buy at a high end grocery.) The flavor was fantastic! I couldn’t beat the cost because I often buy ground chicken on sale at my local grocer because the sell buy date is approaching. I’ll do this whenever time permits and will experiment with other spices, flavors and meats. The four star review is because when cooking only 1# of meat, the probe on the thermometer isn’t long enough to be in the center of the meat, so I’d suggest making 2#s at a time. Tip: Be aware that during the boiling process the meat press would occasionally pop up a little and release a bubble of boiling water. • Better quality and larger than competitors, good thermometer, good spring, no handle
I ordered two different but similar meat presses in a similar price range at the same time. This NEWHAI which costs around $28.50 at time of review, and a JIANWEI which sells for $25. NEWHAI is definitely larger with a full length stronger spring so it will still work on smaller batches. The lid has a nice integrated cup that holds the large thermometer. The thermometer has a BIG display with cute symbols for different meat types as well as normal temperature numbers in C and F. My only criticism is there is no handle, although you can grip the sides of the thermometer cup, it's still awkward particularly with tongs to lift it out of a hot water bath. I still prefer this NEWHAI, it's just feels better made, the spring and thermometer in particular are better. ... show more

  • Not worth the price

  • Lunch Meat Maker
Before we get into this very far, this is NOT a testimonial for homemade lunch meat. Rather, I'd like to express some observations about the apparatus. The device should absolutely be adequate for its purpose: to cook and compress meat into a sliceable loaf. I found it to be rather flimsy and bendy. Upon screwing the cover on, there are no stops. It is easy to screw too far so that the lid pops off. A good thing: As shown in the photos, the manual thermometer can be easily removed. Just pull it out. The remaining hole can possibly be used for a digital probe. This enables you know when the proper temperature is reached without staring at it constantly. Recommended with reservation. ... show more

  • Make your own lunch meats...
Tired of all the additives in your deli meats? Make your own. With a blender/food processor, some seasonings, canning salt, and this device, you can make your own lunch meats. This is actually simple to use. Just prep your ingredients ahead of time, toss in the raw meats, cover, add to a simmering pot until the desired temp, chill, slice, and enjoy. At $32 this is a little on the higher side. Maybe wait for a sale. 3 stars simply for the cost. ... show more
