  • Wonderful little powerhouse of a switch
First off, if you are looking for a router: look elsewhere. While this can run routerOS, consider it an in-extremis stopgap solution. The CPU on this thing is a little single core clocked at 800mhz. for a small 100M router, it would be fine, but you will redline it and get well below 1G speeds. If your actual router gets struck by lightning and blows up, this will make do in a pinch, but its not what it's designed for. As a switch however, this thing is fantastic, and the cpu is more than plenty to give you a management interface to configure all the bells and whistles you might expect from a smart switch. For the price(~$150), it can't be beat. Its so cheap, that it is competitive with simple media converters for the speed (and gives extra ports on either end as well). I had one running as a switch for a while, and recently figured out you can split the ports with the port isolation to turn it into a 2 channel media converter with an extra gigabit side tap. Its just a remarkably versatile and useful little device. ... show more

  • Four ports of 10Gb goodness
This is a very interesting device. I needed a few 10GbE ports for my VMware and NAS lab at home. This one fit the bill since I could use the existing 1GbE ports as backup. I powered the device using a PoE injector because I already had one in place to run my WiFi access points and cabled the ports up with twinax SFP+ cabling. The RouterOS interface and options were intimidating, even for someone with 25 years in IT. Documentation is kinda all over the place on MicroTik's site. This switch looks like more of project kit sometimes especially when reading the docs. I found the place in the UI to boot to SwOS since I only needed Layer 2 and things got going from there. The switch MTU is set for jumbos and comes that way by default. After poking around in the docs for a while, I finally figured that out. SNMP works fine but doesn't support v3. There's no HTTPS on the management web UI. No SSH. All these are a little disappointing but the config is easy and it has been solid so far. There's no competition in this price point for 10GbE ports. I'm going to continue powering it from that PoE injector just because it's cool. It loses a star for documentation. ... show more

  • Great way to expand a small network with Fiber
We bought this to expand our network with remote switches via fiber optic cables. Ubiquiti equipment is very particular about on it's devices on the network. This device worked perfectly and is invisible to the system. The only issue we had was we could not use the Ubiquiti SFP Jumper cable to connect it to the system. I used a regular Fiber Optic patch cable with SFP Fiber modules and we were up and running. If you're trying to get more speed on your network or need to add switch farther than Ethernet cables can run, this is the device you want. ... show more

  • Good Inexpensive SFP+ Switch
Probably the least expensive mini switch that can accept several SFP+ modules from a well known brand. Seems to be SFP+ module vendor agnostic. Have not had issues with it. SwOS management is relatively straightforward.

  • AMAZING!
This switch is extremely powerful and has features on features... I buy a lot of tech and this is by far the most surprised I have been with quality. I can't recommend this 10Gb switch enough. Seriously, just buy it. The documentation is excellent as well, which is surprising to see this degree of quality in such a cheap switch. ... show more

  • Great little device
Using it with SwOS, very straightforward to get up and customized. Great online resources, make sure you update it to the latest version, super easy to do through the web interface. Was eyeing this for a while, now this runs my network core: 2 x multimode fiber to Xyxel switches using Cisco SFP+ modules, 1 connection directly to a 10Gbps server, and a 2.5 Gbps WAN connection. Ethernet is being used for a NAS and a Pihole. Considering getting a second one so I can have some more 2.5 Gig ports in my office, very solid and capable device. ... show more

  • I didn't really know what to expect, but honestly was not expecting something this good
I had never even heard of MikroTik prior to getting this switch. I just searched for the top rated 10gb capable switch with more than 2 ports and I am quite glad I did. I ordered the 5 port 10gb and 3 RJ45 transceivers so I could connect both my desktop and my Unraid server (both using ASUS XG-C100C 10G cards) to my Qnap TVS-951x NAS, as the NAS had only one 10gb port. I got everything all wired up with cat 7 and was quite happy with the performance right out of the gate, and I figured "it's just a switch, I have tons of those" so I didn't really think or bother to check if the switch even had a web interface. I was doing some diagnostics in which I needed to check something with the connection so I decided to check if there was a way into the switch, which was when I discovered what I now consider to be a hidden gem, the RouterOS software that the switch came with. As I mentioned, I thought it was "just a switch", turns out this thing has an extremely comprehensive and feature-packed operating system, with what seems like every functionality under the sun (from a quick glance over, at least) and tools for everything from email testing and verification to traffic generation. I am quite impressed with what you get for the price. Overall, the only gripe I have about the unit isn't really the fault of the unit, but with the RJ45 transceivers I am using, they were causing the whole setup to get alarmingly warm. Since the switch is a fanless design, that might end up becoming an issue for you. Luckily, it is extremely well ventilated, so as long as whever you are using it has some sort of airflow, it should be fine. Of course, if you are using different transceivers, it should not even be an issue for you. I pointed a small fan at them and everything is perfectly cool now, which I should have done long ago anyways as it is also helping cool the rest of the equipment near it. That said, so far it has been great, and I definitely recommend it. ... show more
