    • Butane is the *best* fuel for a portable solder iron.
I have used portable butane soldering irons professionally in the past. Battery powered soldering irons may be 1/2 way decent now, but back in the day they couldn't hold a candle to a butane soldering iron. I used to use the Archer brand (Radio Shack) butane soldering iron, and it worked exceptionally well for my uses (which was soldering PL-259 connectors onto the end of coaxial cable used on 2-way radios). It came with a flint sparker, which worked well for a while, but then it'd start taking longer and longer for it to fire up. I only mention this, because this PI-40SiK soldering iron looks like it's the same technology, and will probably have the same problems in the future. I worked around the problem of it being slow to start by just bringing a small torch with me, and when I turned on the iron, I'd use the torch to inject a flame right into the "heart" of the tip, and it'd fire up instantly. I was able to use that tip well past it's intended life, and I expect that with enough use these tips to act the same way, and using this technique may help you extend the usable life of the tips. What I like: * This come in a nice padded case, with indentations for the various tips and tools, including a sponge and tray. * You get most of tips that you would probably want, including a heat shrink tool. * It comes with 2 of the small pointed tip, that I suspect a majority of people would use the most. What I don't like: * The vent on the tip. It's annoying to have that much directed heat in one spot. My other butane iron didn't have a dedicated exhaust port, and I never had a problem with the heat around it. * The tank is bigger than it needs to be in my opinion. I'd rather have a smaller, more manageable iron, since I'm gonna have fuel handy in any case. * I wished it had a bevel tip, for times when you need to put a lot of heat on a connection. The included tips could be tricky to get enough surface area in contact to transfer more heat. * The fill nozzle is a non-standard size. No adapter on any of my bottles of butane would make a clean seal. As part of my testing, I tried using this for soldering normal stuff, and it worked well enough. With a fairly low setting, it generated enough heat for me to solder what I was working with, which was some 12/14 gauge wire. My only complains were the exhaust from the tip, and physical size of the iron. I also tried out the heat shrink attachment (I usually use my hot air machine for this job), and it worked well, but it was extra thick heat shrink, not the normal thin stuff. It appears they are using a non-standard nozzle, for the butane. Nothing I have would fill it without spilling. I did a little searching, and a single 5.125 Oz bottle of Mater Appliance brand butane costs between $7 and $12 a bottle, which is rather expensive. This is called vendor lock-in. They make their stuff not compatible with anything else, and force you to buy that common part from them at inflated prices. When companies do this, they need to be called out. Say no to vendor lock-in. If you need a decent butane solder iron, that won't break the bank, then this will do the job. If you're a professional, and using a butane solder iron all the time, you might want to look into the Master Appliance Ultratorch UT-100SiK, as it is a higher end model of butane soldering iron. ... show more

A really nice, well rounded portable iron. heats up super fast and has a good run time. nice case and accessories. very happy with this one, its going to stay in my long term camping/overlanding electrical kit.

    • Wish I had this when I was younger!
I've been working with electronics for many (many!) years now. My goto soldering iron was one of those corded starter sets with 3 tips, a holder for placing the unit down when hot, a sponge and a small coil of solder. There are always issues with the cord wrapping around something it ought not while working, and a newer issue cropped up when the kids got old enough to reach up and grab hanging cords. But I persevered and have never deviated from my choice. Until now. This unit is great! It has all the features of my old soldering iron, minus the cord. That means the kids (or grand kids, now) won't be able to yank the cord and burn my hands as I try to catch it and avoid injury to them. It's also got a nice, portable case that keeps everything together rather than scattered in one of my workbench drawers. The soldering iron heats quickly and provides precision soldering for my components and wire repairs. The only thing missing is butane, which can be easily obtained from any local hardware store, or online. Another nice feature of this unit is that it has adjustable temperature settings. My old unit had just one temperature, so anything I worked with better be ok with 'hot'. Now I can finesse the temperature to whatever the conditions call for. Win! I am every excited to add this product to my tool kit and I highly recommend it for anyone doing precision electronic soldering. ... show more

    • Easy to use and cordless convenience
I never realized how convenient a cordless soldering iron could be. Actually, I guess I never realized how much time and effort I put into making sure the cord of my old one wasn't getting in the way. This butane-powered beauty is great. Easy to fill just like a couple lighters I have around the house, and the convenience and portability are immediately apparent. Works well, and lasts as long as any project I've asked it to do. Other than what seemed to me like some temperature variations, I found this soldering kit to be excellent. Had to fix one of my PS5 controllers (stick drift) and ended up having to do a decent amount of soldering to install some new parts. It may have been an error on my part, but at some points it seemed like the temperature fluctuated but it's very possible I wasn't paying enough attention and chalked it up to the tool because I found it to be excellent when I wasn't multi tasking too much. ... show more
