  • good saxophone pairing with a yamaha mouthpiece
Bought this saxophone for my 9th grader who has played alto saxophone for 3 years, but new to soprano. He tried and told me that I probably should return it because something is not right, the tone is too flat. I ordered a Yamaha mouthpiece and some Rico 2.5 reeds right away after reading other reviews, hope these could help. After putting on the new Yamaha mouthpiece and Rico reed, problem solved! It sounds great! I enjoyed some Kenny G songs. :) ... show more

  • (Updated) Mine was terrible when I received it, but a local shop has fixed it up for me.
Color: Silver Body-Gold Keys
*** UPDATE REVIEW (3/5) *** Alright, so shortly after making this review, I took it to my local instrument shop, and had their repair guy work his magic. Surprisingly, it works MUCH better than it did when I first received it. I wish I could tell you exactly what he did to fix it, but honestly I have no idea. They were going to charge me $100 for fixing it but for some reason they felt nice and didn't charge me. All the problems I have listed in the initial review are fixed, the only one that's cutting it close is the tuning, they had to shave down the cork on both necks A LOT to get the Yamaha mouthpiece to be able to go far enough on the neck to not be super flat. If you buy it, I guess be prepared to have it give you problems and a shop might be able to fix it... *** INITIAL REVIEW (1/5) *** So, like you are, I read through the reviews, 150 reviews, averages out to 4 stars, can't be that bad right? The top reviews say that the saxophone is surprisingly good for the price, the only thing that sucks is the mouthpiece, and a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece is like $30 to replace it so who cares, right? I've been playing various saxophones, Yamahas, Selmers, Tenors, Bari's, etc. since about 2012, about ten years. This is the worst saxophone I've seen in those 10 years. I've been trying to play/fix it for two days now. Because all the top reviews said that the mouthpiece was terrible, I bought a Yahama 4C standard mouthpiece and some Vandoren strength 3 reeds before even getting the saxophone at my door. --- CONS --- - Mouthpiece is actually terrible, unusable. So the rest of these cons are WITH a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece... - Saxophone as a whole is extremely flat, like extremely flat, middle C should register as a concert Bb, middle C on mine registers as an in-tune concert A... No amount of pushing the mouthpiece in more or biting down harder on the reed out of desperation will get the pitch to go up high enough to not be an entire half-step too flat. - The G# key does nothing. When you press the key down, it raises a little lever that's supposed to bring a small pad up and well- play G#. When the little lever goes up, the pad is already up. Fingering G and G# both play G#... - Low B key clicks when pressed, making for a very weird key action. The key will go all the way down and the pad will go all the way down, but on the way down and back up you'll hear and feel a "ka-klunk" still not sure what's catching on what. - For some reason going from middle C# to middle D sounds like a full step and not a half-step, maybe this problem is related to the other G# or just general out of tune problems? Haven't figured out the cause yet. --- PROS --- - None I'm going to take the saxophone to a local music/repair shop to see if they can fix the problems it has. But for now, that's where I am with this saxophone. I regret my purchase, unfortunately I think the real solution is just to save up for a quality saxophone... ... show more

  • Pretty good for price point
Color: Black Nickel-Gold Keys
For the price, it's pretty good. There were a few fittings that needed adjusting out of the box, and the included mouthpiece and reeds aren't very good. Ultimately a good entry soprano sax for a first time player.

  • Surprisingly nice horn!!! Bought different mouthpiece.
So I haven't played in years! Like 13 years since I dabbled in church band and 15 since high school band. I marched an alto and for jazz and concert, played a tenor in the way back. My mouth is completely out of shape!! I have always wanted a soprano though so I finally ordered this one. It's pretty cool! The sound will improve as I do but its not the horn, I assure you its me! I used everything that came with the sax to play it and I agree with most reviews, the mouthpiece is total crap! I have another one coming tomorrow. I'm using the reeds because I figure by the time I run through them, (12, not 11 as advertised) I'll be able to notice the nicer reeds. For now, I'm honking and squeeking so bad that there is no reed that can save me! Lol I wish so bad that these Chinese horns were available when I was in school. I played a few of the most used up beat down saxes on the planet and for a few hundred bucks could have had one like this! There is really everything you could need in the box ready to go! I don't know how you could put a lyre on it to March, maybe thats not something people do?? But other than that, everything is as expected. My tenor is a vintage selmer Paris super action 80 and I've had a couple Altos, Yamaha and some off brand I can't remember now. Point is, I've played a few different levels of sax, although not soprano, and this one really seems to be made well! My senior year, I was also the in house repair person for saxes, I could fix most anything that the marching band could destroy unless it needed welded so I do know how they should work. The keys are very responsive and the pads seem to be a fine quality. I did order a few Chinese pads for my tenor a few years ago, had some dried out and nasty ones, and they were absolutely fine so I do expect these to be OK as well. I was reluctant to order this because it isn't something I really have time for anymore but I've been making time to play and I'm really loving it!! Good thing I drank that bottle of cheap wine at new years and bought it! Hahahaha!!! That explains why its pink! Who ever heard of a pink saxophone? I love it!! ... show more
