I've owned my Kestrel6000 since last summer. I live in the Pacific Northwest where the days are short and cloudy during the winter. As a result of normal climatic conditions, the solar panel is unable to charge the system, and it has been offline most of the time since November. As a terrain and climate analyst, I really looked forward to having an advanced weather station, but the KestrelMet6000 has proved incredibly disappointing. I wanted to be able to keep track of climatic trends for the rural area I live in, but I'm better off using data from the manual precip and temperature instruments I already own as it's far more dependable. I have reached out to customer service, even offering to pay for a solution such as modification of the system to enable a backup battery, or to be able to plug into power and was basically brushed off with "Yeah, we're hearing that from other users up North but we don't have a solution in the works". DO NOT waste your money on this system if you are likely to have consecutive days of cloud cover, as the station basically stops working. Go buy yourself a rain gauge to mount on your fence and an outdoor thermometer and you'll save yourself a grand and have more useful data. ... show more

I bought this directly from KestrelMet in 2023 for my wife's birthday. It functioned great during the summer but once winter hit it's been terrible. The solar panel is too small to recharge the battery during our north Montana winters and there is no other way to recharge the battery and there's no why to replace the battery with a charged version. Communicating with KestrelMet we get the reply that that they are aware of the problem and discussing if they're going to work on it. Note they didn't say they were working on the problem but discussing whether or not they were going to work on it. Very disappointed in the KestrelMet's winter performance. ... show more

For under $1000, you're getting everything you need, and for $300 more, cellular connectivity. Save for an early bug with the pressure (which was on Ambientweather.net's side, not the station), this thing is accurate as a Davis Vantage Pro2. And you need to get the plus to get the 24hr fan aspiration, which is standard on the KestrelMet. What they REALLY need is a method to detach the anemometer from the unit. I prefer to have the instrumentation at ground level for easy maintenance, but that means the wind readings are seriously compromised. Size: AT&T Compatible Style: Station w/ Leaf Wetness Sensor
The system is excellent when it operates correctly. If you call customer support they'll pass the buck and you'll never get a call back from the "person who knows about these things". After emailing and 5 calls I gave up. We have 7 of these systems and two that do not work. One was brand new, which leads me to believe the quality control has gone down. Caveat emptor ... show more
