Features

  • PERFECT BAITCASTING REEL FOR FINESSE FISHING - The Kestrel Elite BFS (Bait Finesse System) baitcasting reel is the lightest fishing reel on the market weighing only 4.4 ounces! KastKing Kestrel Elite baitcasting reel allows anglers to effortlessly cast lightweight baits farther with greater accuracy while nearly eliminating backlashes. Plus, the minimal weight and comfortable, compact size make the Kestrel Elite a breeze to fish with all day long!
  • ADVANCED BRAKING TECHNOLOGY - The FAF (Flyout Arc Finesse) Braking system was designed specifically for finesse fishing. Two half-ring magnetic brakes automatically adjust to slow down the spool when braking is needed to prevent backlashes. As the speed of the spool decreases, the magnetic field inside the spool diminishes and the magnets retract to maximize casting distance. There is also an external fingertip brake adjustment dial for fine tuning spool speeds for smaller baits.
  • INNOVATIVE SPOOL - The ultra-lightweight BFS shallow feather spool weighs only 5.6 grams! The smaller spool excels at handling the smaller diameter lines best suited for finesse fishing. The shallow spool requires less effort to turn and get up to speed, therefore enabling anglers to effectively cast lures down to 1/16 oz.
  • STRENGTH WITHOUT THE WEIGHT - The compact Palm Perfect design (36.5mm height) and magnesium frame reduces the total baitcasting reels weight to only 4.4 oz. Although the KastKing Kestrel Elite baitcasting reel is as light as a feather, it doesnt skimp on power. The main gear and shaft are constructed of hard anodized aluminum and linked to a 100% brass pinion gear. A carbon handle and side plates also keep the weight low while maintaining strength.
  • ADVANCED LINE GUIDE - The patented LFTV (Low Friction Tapered Vortex) Line Guide decreases the angle at which the line enters the guide, limiting friction during casts. Straighter line and reduced friction results in fewer backlashes and greater distance on casts, both of which are qualities highly desirable among serious finesse anglers.

  • Good reel, get what you pay for.
Color: Left-8.4:1
I love baitcasters for their elegance compared to spinning reels, but one of the big downfalls of baitcasters is that they are not good at throwing light lures. This "BFS (bait finesse system)" reel was supposed to be designed to overcome this engineering issue. The reel is pricey, but you get what you pay for. Build quality is excellent, it is very light, made of magnesium. It feels very high class, very smooth to operate. I have it spooled with 6 lbs test braid with 4 lb mono leader. I bought it for the purpose of throwing trout magnets (which are fished with a 1/64 oz jig, a very light lure), attached to a small weighted float. I have to confess, the reel has a bit of a learning curve, I got quite a few bird nests in the very beginning, even though I'm very accustomed to baitcasters in general. However after an hour of playing around with it on the creek, I was able to cast it pretty well with no problems, and landed some nice trout. You may have to adjust how you cast it compared to a regular baitcaster, casting a heavier lure. And of course you still can get it to backlash like any baitcaster, if you hit an unexpected tree branch or something, but for the most part it is able to do what it advertises. I would say if you like fishing for trout, and want a baitcaster able to throw small lures, this is a solid choice. ... show more

  • An Excellent Reel
Color: Right-8.4:1
I have been using baitcasting tackle for about 60 years and have always preferred it to spinning or spincasting gear. I actually started out using a Pflueger Supreme that was made in the 40s, then upgraded to an ABU5000, and have used most of the popular brands since. I usually have 10 to 12 reels on the deck when fishing, but always had to use spinning gear for lighter jigs and lures. I was interested when I first heard of the BFS type reels that will cast the lighter weights. I first bought a cheaper Kastking Zelpyrs to see if it was really possible to cast a 1/16 oz jig with baitcasting tackle. I found that it was, and decided to buy this more expensive model. As the title says, I think it's an excellent reel. I put it on a medium light rod and mainly use it to fish 1/8 oz baits. It casts easily, has a great drag, and is very smooth. I understand the complaints some reviewers have about the small handle, but it has 4 bearings in it and is super smooth. I'm not using it to muscle fish, so the smaller size handle doesn't bother me on a finesse reel like this. The worst thing about it is that it makes all my other reels feel heavy and clunky. ... show more

  • High performing finesse fishing bait caster
Color: Left-8.4:1
I took delivery of the new Kastking Kestrel Elite in left hand wind March 21st. I’ve owned several Kastking reels and currently own and use 2 Diawa Tatulas and 6 different models of top-shelf Shimano bait casters. My impressions of the Kestrel are in the context of these other great reels. Initial impressions were good - packaging was nice and the reel was noticeably smaller and lighter than my Bantam MGL 151, which is the reel I have that is closest in comparison to the Kestrel. I spooled the reel with 20lb Powerpro braid with a 10lb mono leader. The spool was small and very light. I was able to secure the braid to the spool through one of the weight-reduction cutouts on the spool - this was handy and eliminated broad-slip. I tested this reel out using an unweighted Yamamoto fluke on a light Gamakatsu offset hook. The first rod I used was a 7 foot 1 inch medium heavy fast spec. This combo did not compliment the Kestrel and balance and cast accuracy were issues. The second rod I paired with was 7 foot 6 inch medium-light fast action rod and this combo proved to be quite good. It did not take long to dial in the Kestrel once it was paired to the medium light rod. I was able to cast the weightless fluke with ease, even with a brisk headwind. On a couple of occasions, with a very forceful cast and an unexpected sudden stop, I experienced a backlash. These backlashes where not very deep in the spool and we’re easily picked out. As a final test, I tried skipping the fluke and found that the Kestrel was more than up for the task. In fact, I rank the Kestrel at the top of the list of my bait casters for skipping. In summary, I might be tempted to say that this is a great bait caster for the money, but that would be selling this reel short. The new Kastking Kestrel is a great reel in comparison against any of my reels and that is saying something. This reel has earned a spot in my lineup and I’m looking forward to taking advantage of its superior skipping ability. ... show more

  • Great reel, the knobs could be better. Too slim.
Color: Right-8.4:1
Great reel, the knobs could be better. Too slim, for that reason I swapped them out. Went with Lews round WINN knobs instead. Kastking has some good reels, they're are still consistent with these random dumb choices. Casting lite lures as good or better distance wise vs a spinning reel. Zero exaggeration. The reel could be a 5/5 with better default knobs. ... show more

  • What a reel
Color: Left-8.4:1
Lightest in the world and very nice material - I needed to have this. I bought it and I wasn't dissapointed. Delivered fast and put some Kastking 13x braided 10lb line on it. Super smooth, nice drag, looks good and it is really really lightweight. Only spent so much money for a reel once before and I think I will do it again. You get what you pay for.
