Description

Former SNL writer and comedic rising star Julio Torres takes readers on a journey through the lives and intimate dramas of some of the unsung shapes of our time in this picture book inspired by his HBO special My Favorite Shapes. Shapes. You’ve heard of them. You might have even interacted with a few. But do you really know them? • I Want to Be a Vase
This book is amazing on so many levels. I loved reading it with my 9-year old daughter and with the students I work with. True happiness can only happen when you are true to yourself. Plus, Julio Torres is a comic genius.. genius :) Do yourself and anyone in your life who needs some reassurance a favor and immerse yourself in this book :) Then, wear it as a hat (that will make sense in the end...trust and believe) ... show more

  • Open your eyes to what you could be. Kids love it!
I got this for my 8 and 5 year olds. They were kind of confused about the objects talking to each other. Once they "got it" they loved it. They realized all the different things they want to be and want to try. The story is creative and uplifting. It is inclusive and promotes communication and working together. It is funny for both kids and adults. The art work is very pleasing as well. Great book. Buy it. ... show more

  • I have a new hat...
I'll admit, I am adult and am a fan of Julio Torres as a comedian, and yes I realize that the syntax level of the book if for young children, however, it must be said that the message this book has to offer has no age limit. It is about self-identity, self-respect, mastering the "ID" monsters that we all share, transcending all of those destructive thoughts and messages that tell you not to love yourself and achieve greatness. Plus, not only is the message of the story is beautiful, but the design and artwork is stunningly playful and gorgeous. Go ahead and purchase multiple copies & gift this book to those you love and cherish! ... show more

  • Surreal and hilarous and inclusive
This is my favorite kid's book about being yourself, rather than who you're expected to be. It's not explicitly an LGBTQ book but I think my trans 7-year-old daughter loved it and related to it more than any of the more mainstream ones we've read. The art is lively and weird and the humor is dry and, well, also weird - in the best ways. Absolutely adore this book. ... show more

  • A perfect book
Kids and adults will love it. Funny, irreverent, and sweet.

  • Funny, sweet, and wonderfully strange!
I have to be honest: I’m a grown-ass man, and being a fan of Julio's humor, I bought this book for myself. As much as a child may appreciate the jokes, beautiful visuals, and uplifting message, adults may appreciate the book even more. (Maybe that’s true of every great kid’s book?) Anyway, whether you’re looking for a hot pink absurdist objet d'art for your coffee table or could use a good toilet plunger-protagonist to encourage your child to be whoever they wanna be, this book is worth its weight in gold. Or glitter. ... show more

  • Spoiler alert
Not to spoil the ending but I had to let 17 five year olds wear my copy of this book like a hat after we read it in class. It was a good time. After I read it I put it in the class library because while most of them are too young to read independently, they really enjoyed the unique and colorful illustrations. ... show more

  • Worth it. You won’t be disappointed.
This is now one of my top-3 picture books: 1. “I Am a Witch’s Cat” by Harriet Muncaster 2. “I Want To Be a Vase” by Julio Torres 3. “The Circus Ship” by Chris VannDusen
