Description

This filter makes easy to adjust the brightness of a scene and have more control over the exposure settings of your camera, for both still photography and video use. The filter reduces light transmittance between approximately 1/3 and 1/400th of its original level, by rotating the inner filter ring. This allows a much greater range of shutter speed and aperture values to be set according to the desired effect. For example a long shutter speed can be used to blur water or crowds of people, even in full sunlight. The practical exposure range and light transmittance will vary depending on the situation.

Bought this because of Peter McKinnon. Can finally get proper footage in daylight 😊

  • Hoya quality/value for the price
Size: 52mm
I generally like Hoya quality/value and this is no exception. HOWEVER, after doing more research I found out that variable ND filters use two rotating polarizing filters, a system that can cause issues with the image. I can use this, but if I had to buy again I would spend the money for a filter that has positive stops for each level of ND and will not allow the filter to be rotated into vignetting. Also I'm finding under most of my shooting circumstances that a polarizing filter works fine and I really don't need this. ... show more

  • It works reasonably well
Size: 62mm
If you have read many reviews about this filter, I am sure that you have heard about the cross that can appear across your photo although I feel it more closely resembles an "X" laid on it's side with some warping to it. And yes, this X does definitely occur, especially with the wide angle lenses. However, this problem does not occur at all adjustments. For example, if you are shooting a 21mm lens, you can still get about 5 stops out of the filter without seeing any intensity distortions. If you are shooting at 27mm, you can get 6 stops out of this filter without any problems. Once you get to about 70mm and above, you can really get at least 7.5 stops or maybe 8 with no issues. The big plus I felt regarding this filter is that I did not find any color distortions or chromatic abberations as I have seen with other ND filters I have had previously. In addition, this method is using two polarized filters which can be very nice with removing glare, especially out of water shots, while slowing down the shooting speed to get the nice smooth and calming look in your shot. ... show more

  • I didn’t do my research
Size: 72mm
I bought this because a friend had one. After doing more research online, I found out that there are better ND filters out there. YouTube Gerald Undone’s review of ND filters, you’ll find something you like.

  • It’s ok, with limitations
Size: 77mm
Nice having the ability to have just one ND filter and being able to adjust it. However, it does add a bit of a color cast to your images. Make sure to take a picture of a gray card to be able to adjust the color in post. Also be careful not to turn it too much, or you can end up having a dark X in your image. Its ok for lower ND filters, but for darker ND, you’ll need to just get the single ND filters. ... show more

  • Would not recommend for serious photography
Size: 82mm
Gear: Fujifilm GFX 100S + GF 23mm lens. I purchased the 82mm ND filter and tested on my fujifilm camera with a wide angle lens 23mm. The test photos were shot in a cloudy day. The left photo was taken with the filter with the maximum stop and the right one was taken without. Both were taken in the same location with tripod. I would say the filter does an OK job given its price point but it is definitely not recommended for serious works. The filter caused a visible degradation in quality and clarity. It somehow shifted the white balance to warm as well. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend any filters less than $150 for serious work in general. ... show more

  • you would be better off buying individual stop filters to achieve an even ...
Size: 77mm
I bought this variable ND filter strictly for daylight video purposes. In an effort to keep the 180' rule, this allows you to achieve proper exposure even in harsh sunlight. I have also used it for some photos and I find that there are some odd vignette areas that show up on it. I think for photos, you would be better off buying individual stop filters to achieve an even look across your images. ... show more

  • Awesome Product
Size: 82mm
What can I say about a product that is know know for it's superiority. I can say that this filter is one of the best on that market. As a vlogger I need a good variable density. I bought a cheap one but the image was muddy and garbage. Ever since I started using my Hoya I have been nothing but pleased. ... show more
