  • Poor Man's Helix
Size: Ampero II Stomp
The interface may not be as polished as the Helix, but it's pretty easy once you get used to it. I own a Helix LT and a Powercab 212. I had another rig that used to be analog, but I kept coming back to multi effects units, and then I landed on this one. Like the Helix, the stock sounds aren't my personal preference. I like very simple presets where the amp is the main course, and then a little reverb/boost/compression to season it up a bit. I think this unit may beat the Helix in this aspect. It will at least go toe-to-toe with it. It does lack the processing power of the Helix, and don't even try the pitch shifting. If you want crazy wild sounds and want to fill up every effect bank high DSP effects, you'll be disappointed. It can get overloaded, and it's not always clear that you're running into a limit. I like that there are some unconventional amps and effects that were modeled, like the JCM900, a clean Plexi, a couple Dumbles, the old Marshall stomp boxes. You also get different voices, like a Mesa Dual Rectifier or Bogner with vintage or modern voicing. It's like you get the best from the Atomic Amplifire, Boss modeling, Helix modeling, and Positive Grid. And if you'd like to break out your old rack preamp, this has power amp modeling. The amp organization, It has them categorized, and they sound very convincing. I don't know if it's standard, or if it was just my particular version, but it came with Celestion IRs loaded. This is where Line6 has been lacking, and man do those IRs sound good. So if you're looking for something like the HX stomp, your needs aren't super complex, and you want to save some money, this unit is a good value. It deviates from some of the more standard models, but everything is very useful. They haven't tailored their product to any specific genre, but it's also not overwhelming. I have both the Helix and this unit, and since getting this one, I've found myself gravitating more towards this unit. I'd totally recommend this if you want high quality sounds at a more affordable price than the big names. ... show more

  • Very nice unit
Size: Ampero II Stomp
I've had this for a few months now. I was originally just using it as an effects unit on my pedal board and using a UA Dream 65 as my amp modeler. Which sounded great. But I was craving some marshall tones and decided to try out the amp models in this unit. I landed on the JCM 800 for dirty and put some od pedals in front of it. Sounded fantastic. I then set up a dumble amp for clean and slightly overdriven tones and it was a nice complement. I added the Ampero Control to this and I'm basically set now for live gigs. I've got two expression pedals, one controls volume and the other controls the mix for delay and reverb so I can go from relatively dry to very wet just with the exp pedal. For those of you complaining about this thing not having scenes ( I used to be one of them ), with the Ampero Control, you can approximate scenes as you can send a series of cc messages to turn certain things on and off. This works very well for me and I'm no longer concerned about scenes. Things that need improvement: 1. The tuner isn't up to par, I've had to add a poyltune to my board as this thing isn't precise enough. 2. The touchscreen is responsive but the buttons are small so it's not always great to navigate certain things. 3. You can run out of DSP when using dual amps before you fill up all your slots. ... show more

  • Small, Intuitive, Affordable & Impressive Guitar Amp Processor
Size: Ampero Mini MP50VN
I’ve resolved to transition to an Amp Processor to relieve my Lower Back and Knees(both now replaced - Left & Right) from hauling Amps around. Some Multi-Effects Processors appear too steeply priced for my budget and consideration, but the Hotone Ampero Mini seemed to have the best combination of low price, small size, & features. Some reviews indicated that it takes pedals well, So, I decided to give it a go as a possible Fly-Rig Base. My style of music includes Jazz, Blues, and R&B, so I’m definitely interested in the CLEAN Amp Models. My initial tests, so far, involve feeding it into a Motu-M4 Audio Interface via Mackie MDB-1A Direct Box and out to PreSonus E3.5 Mini Monitors. This should simulate going direct to Front-Of-House in a Live Gigging Situation or going direct to a PA for Rehearsals with the Band. For some reason, the Hotone Website page for downloading the Windows Software is not available, so I’m unable to test the USB-to-PC Performance. There are basically 10 CLEAN Amp Models, so after trying all the default presets, I assigned the 10 CLEAN Amps to P01 - P10 as P01-1(Tweed Lux - Rhythm), P01-2(Tweed Lux - Lead 1), P01-3(Tweed Lux - Lead 2), … P10-1(BassmanBrt - Rhythm),P10-2(BassmanBrt - Lead 1),P10-3(BassmanBrt - Lead 2). From there, I will play around with the Effects, CABS, Delays, Reverbs, etc. to see what works best. Those 10 sound quite good already with minimal tweaking, but it’s good to have some flexibility there. I’ve found the TouchScreen Interface to be quite intuitive, such that I’m not bothered much by the current unavailability of the Windows Software. However, because of the software unavailability, I will not give it a 5. On the Price, Size, Ease of Use, Feature Set and Quality of the CLEAN Amps, I will give it a 4. ... show more
