The thickness is ideal, it tells me that it's durable and last more than just heating. There's a slight smell first time heating but it's like any ceramic or pottery heating up it's not unpleasant nor does it affect the taste in any way. The wooden pie slider is high quality as well, never had one before now i can't imagine not having it. Follow their instructions though for best results. Preheat oven and stone to 475f-525f, use your convection feature if you have it. Expect much shorter cooking times. No more soggy pizza centers. Very impressed with the functionality of this pizza oven set that made an evenly baked crust at 500ºF. Highly recommend using parchment paper in between the pizza stone and pizza to avoid sticking.

I'll admit I'm new at pizza making but I struggled with this product. I kept the product but did buy another brand with a longer peel. The peel wasn't long enough for me. The stone was fine but extremely hard to clean. It did cook evenly so I kept it to try again but I won't be using the peel again.
