  • Inexpensive and effective press--use with CAUTION
Color: Red Pattern Name: Grill
We had panini all over Sicily for lunches--grilled sandwiches with fillings like ham and cheese or tomato with cheese and eggplant (my favorite "Alla Norma." They are a way to make a meal out of simple fillings and good bread --with some soup and salad you even have dinner. So this press is simple and not terribly expensive. But it has some flaws, but if you can deal with them, it's a good buy as as reliable as a waffle iron. 1. The lid gets HOT HOT HOT. As in burn you bad. The grill below the lid is not insulated so NO CHILDREN operating this--and frankly no one easily forgetful. Use a silicone mitt to lift it when the sandwich is grilled. Oh, and that lid stays HOT after you finish grilling for quite some time. Oh, and no temp control or on-off. 2. Not much in the way of an instruction book; a small, finely printed slim pamphlet. 3. Short cord. It barely went from the counter to the outlet behind. 4. No removable plates, so you will be cleaning it with a soft wet cloth when it cools. Now that the complaints are aired, I have to say, it made a well baked sandwich quickly and easily. Be sure to use a bread like ciabatta or Italian bread, not fluffy regular sandwich bread. The reason for this --the airy types of bread dry out as they bake in the panini press. Ciabatta rolls are used all over Italy and brushed with olive oil, they are crusty but not dry. As to Panini alla Norma, make a "Norma" pasta sauce (tomato sauce, eggplant, onion and a little garlic) and add slices of ricotta salata (dry ricotta aged in salt.) You can use feta for the ricotta salata, it's hard to find in the US but you can make it at home. The eggplant cubes are often baked in recipes, don't do that. Fry those cubes well and drain. Seriously, they need to be SOFT and SUCCULENT and not dry from baking. You can try air fry but douse with olive oil. Anyway you cut your eggplant (thin slices, cubes) make sure you cook it to gooey softness. One more warning; the filling will be boiling hot when you take the panino out to slice it. Again, caution and wait to bite into it if you don't want a burned mouth. ... show more

  • Perfect for two people, cord a bit short.
Color: Chrome Finish Pattern Name: Grill
What I don't like. * The cord is a bit short. Our cabinets are the standard 13"+ a bit over the counter top and when I open this press it will hit the cabinet bottom before fully opened. If I slide the press close to the edge of the counter top so it will clear the cabinet when open, then the cord is too short to reach the plug on the backsplash. The cord only needs to be about 4" longer - Grrr. * The grill top pivots freely - there is no arm to hold it parallel with the bottom. This requires the sandwich to be placed in the exact center of the grill and to be filled evenly or else the grill top will pivot and mush one side thinner than the other. * The cord is a pain to store. There is a provision on the bottom to wrap the cord but it is an anemic failure. What I like. * The price is nice for what I get. I have never used a sandwich press and wanted to try it out without committing to a large and expensive model. This one is perfect for what I want and the value is strong. * I love the size - this is just right for two people. I can make a big sandwich and we share, or I can turn out two smaller sandwiches. And it is easy to store. * To store, it will stand on edge to reduce the footprint - I love it! * Super easy to clean. If something gooey like cheese burns on then it will come off with just a damp paper towel or wooden spatula, that much force is rarely needed. Usually I just spray on my surface cleaner I use in the kitchen and then rinse that off under running hot water. Then I heat the grill to dry it and when cool I put it away. * The non-stick surface works great - even burnt cheese will come right off! * Super easy operation. Just plug it in to pre-heat. Red light means the power is on. Green light means it is up to temperature and ready to use. No knobs or switches - just plug it in and un-plug it when done! Overall this is a win, a good value, and perfect size for the two of us. The minor drawbacks are easy enough to deal with. ... show more

  • Good, not great
Color: Red Pattern Name: Grill
Ordered this last night because this week’s meal prep includes sandwiches and I was tired of using a spatula to press them while cooking. I knew when purchasing that this press wouldn’t be outstanding and state of the art, but as other reviewers have mentioned, there are a few missing features that I was disappointed not to have. The most important feature I wish it had was simply an on/off button. It’s not impossible, obviously, for me to unplug the press between sandwiches if there’s some “down time,” but it is a little annoying. The next feature I wish the press had was—again, as mentioned in other reviews—a temperature setting. Even “high” vs “low” would be excellent. Lastly, a way to keep the top plate parallel and level to the bottom plate would be nice for when you’re cooking slippery food or not perfectly flat food (like a baguette panini). Now normally, I’m a big believer that cost infers value, and that a basic tool shouldn’t be faulted for not having every bell and whistles, but this press was $44. It’s not $150, but it’s also not $25, and this feels very much like a $25 press. In many ways, I feel like the price tag covered the incredibly fast delivery—for which I am grateful—but I would be sorely disappointed to get this press in a brick and mortar store. Lastly, I should have looked for a press with removable plates for washing. It’s the waffle iron conundrum: you can make great food with it but there’s only so much cleaning you can accomplish. That would probably raise the value to a $60 press, and as soon as this one breaks I’ll be sure to invest that last $16 for a fancier press. ... show more
