  • Great dual charger

Pros: 1. Does the job it's supposed to with no fuss 2. Easy installation (although a little more difficult to direct wire than its singular counterpart) 3. No delicate "smarts" to break the charger by going stupid. 4. Well-constructed sealed metal case. 5. Plug holsters are separate from the charger, so you can put them anywhere, and you aren't beating on the unit when you hang up the plug. Con: 1. As some have mentioned, the charger will put 32A at most to one vehicle when two are plugged in and one is not charging. This hasn't actually had any impact on me at all; here's the math of why it isn't a problem for me: I have two EVs, a Nissan Leaf (24kWh battery) and a Tesla Model 3 long range (75 kWh). The Leaf's recommended discharge/charge range is 20-100% due to their battery chemistry being more tolerant to full charging (according to Nissan), so a max normal charge on it is 80% of the battery, or 19.2 kWh. The Model 3's recommended range is 20-80%, or 20-85%, depending on who you talk to. I do 20-80%, which makes the max normal charge 60% of the battery, or 45kWh. A 240volt charger at 40A puts out 9.6 kW (9.6 kWh/h), and at 32A it puts out 7.68kW, so: Normal charge of the Leaf is 2 hours at 40A and 2.5 hours at 32A. For the Model 3's, 40A takes 4.69 hours and 32A takes 5.86 hours. Admittedly, I have not accounted for the small amount of loss that takes place between charger and vehicle, but in electrical systems, higher currents experience higher percentage loss, so it would most likely narrow this gap even further. So far, having the Leaf for over 4 years, and the Model 3 for 2, I have not run into (nor could I imagine) a situation in my normal day-to-day where the 20% reduction in charging time going from 32A to 40A would matter, as Level 2 home charging isn't meant to be a quick "gas-n-go" type of experience; it saves a ton of money (roughly $200/month for me), not time. If I did experience that unicorn of a situation, unplugging the other vehicle (which has already finished charging) to get the full 40A seems trivial and unimpactful to the usability of the charger. Maybe I would feel differently if I had a vehicle that took 10 or more hours to do a 20-80 charge at 40A, where sitting overnight might not get a full charge at 32A, but the battery pack would have to be 160+kWh for that, which is pretty huge. I'd be looking for a charger with higher amperage than 40A at that point. Went ahead and looked it up as I was curious, and the Hummer EV has a 212kWh battery pack, but less range than the 75kWh Model 3; no judgement if that's your thing, but I'll stick with the 3x more efficient car, and you might want to see if there's a charger that does 100A. On to the other thing worth mentioning; direct wire installation is trickier with the dual than it was for the single. The important stuff did not change; it still accepts the 3/4" flex conduit (Ultratite non-metallic) in place of the pigtail without any extra parts, and the wiring itself still uses the screw terminals. The difference is that the dual has two full-size copies of the single's circuit board, connected with some signal wires that are probably there to balance the load, and since the wiring input runs to the back board, you have to disconnect and remove the front one to wire it up. I'm sure we're all licensed electricians here (right???), just make note/take pictures of what's connected to what as you go and you'll be fine.   • Grizzl-E Duo is perfect if you have two EVs

It was simple to install, the directions are clear, and best of all it works exactly as expected. We have ours plugged into a 50A circuit. When two EVs are plugged in it gives 4 kWh to each vehicle. As soon as one has finished charging, the other jumps to 8 kWh until it is charged. The indicator LEDs could be a bit more friendly, but they do convey the charging status. It would have been nicer if they had one LED for the left side and one for the right side, but the way they alternate status with just one LED does work ... show more

  • Good just don't mount it in direct sunlight

I got this charger to calm the minor plug wars between my room mate and I and when it's working it's super awesome and has survived the a full pacific northwest winter. We both have had charging stations water damaged from the almost constant rain we get here in the winter. The problem it does have is that it over heats in direct sunlight and this is annoying because there's not one word in the owners manual saying it can't take sunlight. But my room mate and I are going to make a enclosure for it to keep the sun off of it and the cables to help them last longer. Otherwise I'm pleased with it's performance 9 out of 12 months of the year. Avoid this model if you live in a hot climate or get lots of sun. I also love that the power settings are only selected by dip switch inside the housing. I have had more than one time accidentally set previous chargers on low power without realizing till next morning. 2 improvements that could be made is offering this unit in white to help it deal with hotter climate conditions. And also offering perhaps a internal digital timer to disable the charger during on peak power times. Yeah I know every car can be programmed for this but I have friends with their own cars and otherwise sometimes cars misbehave. ... show more

  • It’s boxy but it works.

This EVSE is functional, but it’s not very pretty to look at, and its single LED indicator is practically worthless, without pasting a copy of the page in the owner’s manual that deciphers what all the colored flashes mean. They should add a seizure warning. But I don’t worry about that too much, I just plug my cars in and they charge. I also don’t care that when 2 cars are plugged in, the maximum amperage I can get to 1 of the cars is 32 amps instead of 40. Doesn’t really make a difference for the amount of charging I typically need to do, but depending on your situation, this may or may not be a bigger deal to you. The unit is rather large, boxy, and heavy. I mounted it on some plywood in my garage, that I bolted to 2 metal studs. It’s heavy enough that I worried about mounting it to a single steel stud, because of the torquing forces I knew it would experience from dragging the two heavy cables around. Those cables are thicc. And the plywood and the mounting hardware that comes with this thing also make the box stick out a lot farther from the wall than I would have liked. Honestly, I’d have preferred the form factor of the clipper creek, but this thing was half the price, and it gets the job done. Don’t need any smart features, either, as the cars are already smart enough. Oh yeah, I also have Tesla adaptors on the ends of both J1772 charging handles, so they don’t fit in the holsters that come with the unit. Grizzl-E sells Tesla versions of those, but I rarely used the holster for my old single car Tesla EVSE, so I may not even bother getting those. So yeah, if you have multiple EVs but only one 240V outlet, aren’t eligible for any EV charging tax credits, don’t have a seizure disorder aggravated by flashing lights, and aren’t embarrassed to have an unsightly EVSE protruding a foot from your garage wall, this is the EVSE for you! ... show more
