We decided to hang them anyways and they toned down and developed a nice patina in less than a week.     • Do You Desire a Functioning Rain Chain or Merely Dangling Beauty?

I bought this chain a year ago & only recently hung it up w/ excitement! We're in a rainy area of Hawaii Island so didn't take long to see it in "action". Disappointed that rain did not run past first fishes mouth & continue down the chain as expected. Instead, it is "splashy" as another reviewer said & was kind enough to post pic. Tried ways to fix...tail end up? Nope. Removing a cpl links at top so fish mouth could catch more water? nope. Wait for a hard rain, soft rain, medium rain (maybe a finicky design?) Nope, nope and nope. It's a poor design if use as a kusari doi (rainchain) is your objective. It was for me, meant to help keep my water garden in a whiskey barrel below filled but no, it creates a splashy mess. Unfortunately I did not see other review stating my same complaint before purchasing. ~I WILL say that traditional designs such as Lotus Blossoms (shaped like large cups) work marvelously. I know, because we had one at our home which is now buried under 80ft of lava. I'm missing sight & sound of that rainchain very much. Thought I'd try a fancier one this time to celebrate our new home & so disappointed that I want to cry. ~The fish design IS very pretty & I do not find it to be of poor quality material as a different reviewer claimed, thus my generous 3 stars. But if a functioning kusari doi is what you're after...stick w/ lotus or anchor chain type designs. There may be other designs that work well & this is not one of them, speaking only of designs I have seen in ACTION. ~Wish I had extra money laying around to get a functioning chain. A gorgeous rain chain, but the design is not good for down-spouts with significant runoff volume because the fish tail receiving end is a bit narrow and the chain links too large. I use for runoff from a low catchment area roof and added a top collector (site has no gutter or downspout). Works just fine but under unusual high flows tends to scatter the flow rather than focus it downward. Suggest use only in places where the flow is mostly of low volume. ... show more

I ordered two these for a longer than usual chain drop at my front entry, with tighter spacing between the fish (by removing a few links and adding some fish from the second chain). The fish are sturdy, well built, and of a thicker material than I'd really expected. This chain patinas well in the weather and looks best with the fish swimming upstream - facing upwards vertically in other words - in my opinion. It performs best with a dispersion area below it, rain disperses off the top of the chain as a shower in some volume, I'd say about half, and the rest runs down the length and into whatever you have below.
