  • Venu SQ compared to Vivoactive 3
Color: Slate Band Style: Casual
I like Garmin watches because I am more concerned with tracking exercise and health than I am smart watch functions. This is my 3rd Garmin, and the best so far. My previous watches had an LCD screen with backlight. This is OLED, which is much better. The negative is unlike my Vivoactive 3, the screen is not on all the time. But when I set the screen timeout to “long”, it is not too bad. Comes on with a wrist gesture pretty reliably (or a double tap.) As for text messages, I can actually read the entire message, not just the first sentence as with the Vivoactive. You can pick from a list of canned short replies, but I usually just go to my phone to respond. Notifies me of my sports teams via the CBS app on my phone. Battery is pretty decent. For normal use it will probably average five days for me, much better than the Vivoactive. I just could not stomach getting a Samsung watch and being lucky to go a full day of use. I’m a 24/7 watch wearer (I love the sleep tracking.) If I use the GPS, the battery will drain roughly 10% for a 35 minute walk or run. If you turn on the pulseOX overnight, it will drain about 25% of the battery overnight. No reason to keep pulseox turned on, so I recommend trying it every now and then to track your sleep. Good news is I don’t have sleep apnea. When I charged from about 25%, it took a little over an hour to get to 100%. GPS takes a second to come on, so I recommend having your finger on the start button as soon as it locks in. Seems to work like my other Garmin watches. Heart rate monitor is a little more reliable than the Vivoactive, but any wrist based monitor is not going to be incredibly reliable. I like the Garmin app, which is free to use. I can go back years and check past days, for instance when I rode the Seattle to Portland bike ride four years ago. Biggest negative for me is the notification vibration is barely there, even at the "high" setting. Maybe they can update the software. ... show more

  • It's really good, but...
Color: Slate Band Style: Casual
I had it for a couple weeks. Use to track steps, cardio, walks, jogs, gym mostly, but it does so much more. However, after turning off push notifications for certain things I still get them. When you hit a goal like steps, it will alert for each step after not allowing access to anything else unless you stop walking because it gets locked up alerting, but then wait for alerts to stop, then proceed to next function. It's really annoying. I still get voice-mail alerts and phone stuff after turning phone notifications off. Still get others too for social media. Also, it won't track any rep counts for lower body when using strength mode. And when it tracks upper body movements like bench, curls, presses, etc. It won't count all the reps, maybe 7 out of 10, or less sometimes. I like how it tracks my cardio stuff, intensity minutes, heart rate, calories, sleep, etc. Overall, I love it, but it needs some work on the mentioned issues. And I wish it had access to the gym and fitness activity listed in app, but this model doesn't have that feature unfortunately. UPDATE: The issue with the alerts getting stuck was from Samsung health pushing notifications. I turned it off and the issues stopped. I also noticed that the strength training aspect not only doesn't count lower body reps, but when it counts upper body stuff it'll confuse bench with military press, or curls, etc.. So not only does it not count every rep, it counts bench reps and military press or whatever and to change you need to go in and edit each set. I'm not doing it, but that's how you could fix. You can also add the not counted reps and change it to reflect what you're doing, but who wants to do all that! Also hit my intensity minutes and got 500 twice in one day but still never got my Badge! Still love the watch tho. ... show more

  • Updated review
Color: Slate Band Style: Casual
1/31/23 Update: 3.5 stars I contacted Garmin via their website (could not via the store on Amazon for some reason). I got a response in 48 hours with troubleshooting advice. Additionally, they said we would figure out a replacement if the troubleshooting didn't work. Luckily, it did. Very happy with their customer service. 1/28/24 The screen stopped working after having only had it for 5.5 months. I have written to Garmin via their website (nothing via their Amazon shop worked). I will update when I hear back. I liked this watch a lot, overall. The battery life was amazing. It would go and go and go. The mobile app is easy to use and I like the Life Batter feature. Like most, the sleep tracking is so-so. It would record deep sleep when I was in bed reading and do things like that. Also, it didn't often catch my wrist motion and turn the screen on, so I would have to hit the button to see the time, etc. Overall...maybe mine was a lemon. If so, it's a watch that is well worth the money. If they only last this long...definitely not worth it. ... show more
