This is likely the most commonly grown variety in the U.S., and for good reason. It is a large, easy to grow softneck, with a nice mild flavor and excellent storage ability. Cal- Early is one of our "work-horse” varieties we depend on, year after year, for fresh market and garlic braiding. The skins are a nice off-white with a purple blush and it produces 8-10 cloves per head. Product Details Zones: 3-9 Planting Depth: Plant individual cloves with the scab end down and the pointed end up, one to two inches deep in well-worked beds. Spacing: 4" apart in same row. Place 36" between separate rows. Sun/Shade: Full Sun When to Plant:Plant 4-6 weeks before frost. Early-mid Spring. Will develop in spring. or plant in spring for mid-late summer harvest. This is my first attempt at planting garlic, so we’ll see how it turns out next spring. But I got 65 moderate to LARGE cloves that I planted, 35 smaller cloves I peeled and froze for cooking, and just two cloves that were kinda mushy and a little brown that I threw away. I could have planted more than 65 but I have a small raised bed and so I was very selective on which ones I planted. The heads arrived in a brown paper bag inside a paper mailer, which I liked, I wasn’t ready to plant them when they arrived and I didn’t have to worry about moisture, or them not being able to “breathe” in a plastic package. They had a nice subtle fragrance when I walked by them sitting on the counter and I can’t wait to see what comes up next year! ... show more

I planted these about 3 days after they arrived. I planted all of the cloves. The ones that didn't have 'covers' I wrapped in a piece of paper towel. Watered and then it rained for a couple of days. I think this was Hurricane Nicole. Yes, I live in Florida. I counted, just because, 63 cloves. Every single one has grown. Currently about 6" tall. Looking forward to spring! ... show more

When broken down into individual cloves for planting, this is a lot of garlic! My wife planted 90 cloves from these bulbs. Since October is the planting season up this way, we won't really know about taste or germination rates until the Spring.
