I can’t speak for the effectiveness of this mat, as I’m going to return it due to the fact that it’s so lightweight that I doesn’t lay flat. I. The second photo I have a quality heavy duty grill mat next to this one. There is no comparison. It’s hard to see how it curls up in the photo, so I included a side view to show this. I have had my heavy duty GrillTex grill mat for several seasons, which cost about the same as this mat or maybe a little less, and it’s still going strong. This thing looks like it wouldn’t protect much. Maybe I’m wrong, but the weight alone makes me doubt it, and the fact that it won’t even lay flat. This was too expensive to be this light weight. Several reviewers stated that the heat went through this. I can’t comment on that, but I find it believable. I would also think that this mat is waaay too flimsy to put on grass. On the upside, it’s pretty easy to slide your fire pit around on the deck with this mat. Nonetheless, I’m going to buy one that weighs more. I haven't actually gotten a chance to try this out yet. Therefore I cannot comment on flame resistance. It doesn't fold out flat. The folds in the thing, from shipping, stay there. It has kind of a sticky feel to it. I am going to keep it, because I need it, but I'm not super impressed.

For what this cost, I did not expect it to be a sacrificial product. I had one fire with a firepit that has 2 inch legs so it was not sitting right on it. The part of the mat under the pit got crispy on the inside and discolored on the outside. I have no confidence in the part that is now crispy. Either it does nothing and should not be in the mat in the first place or it is now compromised. It did handle occasional embers that escaped just fine. That is why I am giving it 2 stars. However, I had another problem. it trapped the heat underneath and melted/burned by patio sealcoating. It took an hour plus of scrubbing to get that up. I never had that problem without the mat. It was a lot of money for a product that I will not use again and caused me an hour of work. I don't feel I can return it because I threw out the box and it is clearly damaged. I suppose this MAY (big may) prevent something underneath from combusting but it transfers a lot of heat that is then trapped and itself gets ruined from that heat. ... show more
