  • Compact, simple to use machine, makes very good espresso
We own quite a set of coffee makers and grinders: multiple drip machines, multiple Keurig machines, multiple burr grinders, and, a manual espresso machine. Since we currently mainly use a latest top Keurig model, the manual espresso machine seems like a giant hassle (and I want my coffee beans to be fresh), though my wife has been wanting to make fresh espresso again. One type of machine we have not had is a Nespresso. So, when this machine became available, we jumped on it, as a pod-based espresso machine would potentially solve the lack of espresso problem. Machine arrived yesterday. Super easy to setup and very compact. Washed the water reservoir and ran several cups of water through it without a pod. Time to make espresso. We had ordered Peet's #11 pods with this unit (note that unit does NOT come with any pods). Easy to get pod in (just make sure it drops in fully--give it a little push perhaps). Ran the espresso setting (vs lungo), and out came a beautiful shot of espresso, with lovely layer of crema. The taste? Wow, incredibly powerful flavor! Very pleased with the machine so far. Compact enough that we can easily stick it in a cupboard, but then get it out and be ready to make espresso in just a couple of minutes (unit must heat initially, but takes very little time--way less than older style Keurig machines). If we want foamed milk we use one of our mini whisks. Sealed pods will keep fresh for much longer than ground/bean coffee. A nearly perfect solution for people like us who only once or twice a week want an espresso. Especially given the very reasonable price of the unit. Reminder: order pods when you order the unit--must be the original Nespresso style pods. Edit: Hah, thought we were going to be using this only a couple of times per week. Wrong. My wife has been making half a dozen shots every day! (I use it only a couple of times per week though.) Working out very well still, with Peets #11 and Starbucks espresso pods. ... show more

  • Operation is pleasingly simple; Needs "original style" pods; Nice build except for grates.
___Full disclosure: I have only tested this with 1 brand of pods. The pods turned out to be over a year old, so I won't comment on the kind of quality of coffee this makes until fresher pods arrive. I can comment on other factors in the meantime. ___This uses the "original" Nespresso style pods, (termed "original pods" if you are doing any online searching). Whether these pods are available in your location will be important, unless you intend to always order them online. ___Once you have water in the machine, a pod and your cup ready, the operation could not be simpler: Position your cup; Choose your amount of water (basically a single 'pull' or a double/long pull, aka lungo); Lift the silver "arm"; Drop the pod in (the machine cutout shows the outline of the pod--these drop in on their sides); Close the arm. Wait for your coffee (it heats up, then brews). ___Optional: If you are using an espresso cup (tiny), there is a shelf grate you can pull down to place your cup closer to the spout. Not necessary, but saves on splashing and keeps coffee from cooling any. ___When you lift the arm, you can free/open the front of the machine to remove your spent pod--the box holding the spent pods can hold a few, so you don't have clear it between every shot. Below the cup grate covers a small drip container that you can take off and empty/clean when needed. ___The only downsides I see here are the grates: Both the lower silver cup grate and the upper gray grate feel like a frail plastic that will break if handled roughly. Luckily, if they do break, it will not affect the "business" part of the machine. Still, it is a cheap bit of plastic in an otherwise sturdy seaming machine. ___Again, the coffee quality is something I can't review yet, since it would not be fair to ascribe a poor cup made with expired old coffee to be the machine's fault. If coffee is made with fresh beans is bad, then I will come back here to adjust my rating. ___4 stars for now. ... show more

  • Just as good as official brands
I have a Breville Inissia nespresso machine and wanted to have one in the office, so was really happy to get to try this nespresso maker! I'll compare it to the Inissia. Heat up time: Slightly slower (20 seconds compared to 15 for the Inissia) Brew time: Mostly the same. This seemed to depend on the pods. Some pods brew faster than others. Sometimes the Inissia was faster, sometimes the Beanglass was faster. The important one: Brew Quality: Honestly it was hard to tell most espresso shots apart. This also depended on the pod. For darker roasts, the beanglass did a better job. For lighter roasts, the inissia seemed to make a less bitter shot, but that wasn't consistent either. So final verdict on flavor: it's a draw. Some spots where the beanglass is superior: The drip tray had MUCH less coffee spillover after brewing a pod. Where the Inissia had 15mL of liquid that it mysteriously dropped in the tray, the Beanglass had less than 10mL and most of that was water, not actual espresso. Usage: The beanglass is very similar to the inissia as far as how to insert a pod. It doesn't always look like the pod is going to go in correctly, but the plunger straightens things out as you close it and it's all good. Also, one thing I like about this compared to the Inissia is that the spout on the Inissia moves when you move the handle to close or open the chute. This means that some liquid drips out while it's moving and if you've put a tiny espresso cup under the nozzle, then some of that liquid drips on the counter. With the beanglass, NOTHING moves externally. And there were no drips when opening/closing the machine. ... show more
