  • A Solid Contender
Capacity: 512GB
While the SSD space is dominated by big players like Samsung, Western Digital (via SanDisk acquisition) and Kingston, one really needs to look closely if seeking out other lesser known players who provide a good value for money. Emtec - a company that has better brand recognition in Europe - shines out. Pros: - Full 512GB (not 480GB or 500GB) - USB-C interface - makes it useful for both Mac and Windows machines. - Really compact in size (see pictures) - Uses SanDisk 3D Nand Flash (yes, I couldn't help myself opening the unit!) - Uses Silicon Motion's SM2258XT - a reputed and leading brand in NAND flash controllers for SSD - used by the likes of Crucial and other well known OEMs. - Uses JMicron's (another well known Taiwanese silicon company) USB 3.1gen1 to SATA 6Gb/s Bridge - Better than average transfer rates! - Priced right! Cons: - LED placement looks out of place (at the bottom) - Comes pre-formatted with NTFS - not the first choice for Mac machines - No lanyard, keychain hook (tiny things are better secured that way!) - The red band looks like a cheap alternative to cable strap - doesn't really add to the looks or utility! My initial impression is that this is going to be a keeper - particularly after knowing what makes the heart of this SSD. This is going to replace or augment my much beloved Samsung 128GB (Metal bar) USB 3.0 flash drive (MUF-128BA/AM) without me being worried about data loss or sudden failures (which are very common among lesser known brands). Based on my personal experience, I would choose "Made in Taiwan" stuff over where most of electronics is being made anyday and this little fella is from Taiwan. So far so good... I will update my review if there's anything new to report (or if I figure out a better use for the red band). ... show more

  • Good for Nintendo Wii U but device gets too hot in general
Capacity: 256GB
Pros: -Good for use on the Nintendo Wii U game console. A single USB connection to the Wii U suffices to power this drive and the USB 2.0 connection is maxed out by the SSD speed Cons: -Doesn't reach anywhere near advertised write speeds -Gets hot to the touch with heavy use; poor heat dissipation More details: The capacity of 238 GiB seems correct. I successfully filled up the drive with files and read them back without an error. The advertised read speeds of 450 MB/s are accurate. But, I'm getting nowhere near the advertised 420 MB/s write speed. I see closer to 120MB/s using CrystalDiskMark benchmark software, similar to another Amazon reviewer's screenshot. Real-world write speeds seem worse. In Windows 10, copying large files maxed out at 100 MB/s and after a few seconds drops to 66-70 MB/s and stays there (this might be related to the source drive where I'm copying them, however). The device gets hot to the touch after reading or writing a few GB, and I can feel that all the heat is concentrated in about one third of the drive near where the USB cable plugs in. It also takes a very long time (several minutes) for the heat to dissipate. Can't they put some aluminum in to distribute the heat better? This heat can't be good for the SSD. Also, the temperature values reported in SMART (seen with CrystalDiskInfo) don't vary even when the device feels very hot, so they seem to be bogus. Can the device even throttle properly when it gets too hot? Because of the heat, I wouldn't use this device for any heavy duty use, but I'm going to use it on my Wii U which has only a slow, USB 2.0 connection. ... show more

  • Read speeds are great, but write speed quickly drop off a cliff
Capacity: 256GB
The first thing I did when I got this external SSD was to run a disk speed check. Initially I was quite excited I was getting right around 300 MB/s write speeds and close to 350 MB/s read speeds. While the read speeds were slower than advertised (450 MB/s), 350 MB/s is still pretty good. Unfortunately, after a couple of minutes, the write speeds feel off a cliff, dropping down to just above 100 MB/s. 100 MB/s is certainly better than your standard thumb drive, for a dedicated external SSD, 100 MB/s is abysmal. In addition, the case is made from what feels like very cheap plastic, which may be a culprit when it comes to write speeds. I could feel the case heating up during the speed tests, and my guess is that because the case is plastic, the heat couldn't really escape, thus causing the SSD to throttle down. With all that being said, $38 for a 256GB SSD is a pretty good price, and if you're not too concerned about write speeds, this isn't a bad option. Alas, if you're planning on using it for more than just archival storage, the write speeds are going to quickly become a hinderance. ... show more

  • My gamer son loves this
Capacity: 512GB
I got this for my young adult son who games and he loves it. It's solid state so it is very light compared to my own external hard drive.

  • One of my best purchases!
Capacity: 512GB
I am so happy with this purchase! I am a designer, and this portable, light weight SSD makes my life so easy to store all my heavy files. While it comes pre-formatted with NTFS, formatting it for Mac is super easy! I don't doubt the purchase even for a second, as it stands true to all that is stated! I did notice a difference in speed for Mac versus windows, but either way it so much better than all my other storage devices! Absolutely loved it for it size, weight and ease. ... show more

  • Terrible write performance
Capacity: 256GB
Update: I ran this drive through CrystalDiskMark together with the ADATA one it replaced that was much faster (that ADATA having advertised the same speeds as this Emtec). The sequential write is fine, a little slower than the ADATA. It's the 4k random write that is abysmal. Less than 5. Slower than my tiny little Samsung drive that is not even an SSD. I got this to replace a similarly specced drived whose port was going bad. On paper this Emtec had the same write speed as my old drive. In practice it might as well be a 2000s USB stick. It can take 10 minutes to copy a 5GB file and I have no idea why. Old drive was fine on the same PC. No wonder this was so cheap. On the bright side it is wonderfully light. Update: I just watched it randomly fall to under 1MB/s while transferring a 50GB file. At least it hasn't broken or corrupted anything yet. ... show more
