  • Short, sweet, very well illustrated, and WONDERFUL!
I have always been fascinated by the hardships and adventures and dangers that those who went before us had to face and overcome. I could not be living in wonderful Medina, Ohio, had a lot of people not done that!! The photographic illustrations are clear and fascinating. The captions and descriptions are concise and informative. The story of this family and the diary entries have made me appreciate my soft life of comfort, safety, and abundance all the more. I LOVE this book! ... show more

  • Very good !
This book turned out to be exactly what I hoped for. I suppose it's written with school kids in mind. But even at my age it was very informative. The pictures of tools, equipment, supplies and necessary items makes the whole package come together very nicely. Excerpts from the diaries and sidebars of information contribute to a couple hours of valuable historical information. I agree that this book would be great for grade school classes. Also any family or person thinking about a roadtrip west of the Mississippi should at least have ths knowlege in the back of their mind. While driving across the country you'll have a better idea of what the pioneers had to deal with. At about 10 miles a day they made camp every night and broke camp in the early morning. They scavanged for firewood where there were no trees. Everything they owned was either in the covered wagon or walking beside it. Whatever they had in the past was over and gone. A new future was hopefull but unknowen. They cooked, ate and slept outdoors no matter the weather. And they buried their dead parents, spouses & children in places they could never find or visit again. You won't be disappointed with this book. I hope this helps you. Ted ... show more

I teach 2nd grade and this information is right on point. The only problem is that it is a bit wordy. The kids like looking through the pictures on their own but are unable to read all of it on their own.

  • DAILY LIFE IN A COVERED WAGON and the Life of the Mind
DAILY LIFE IN A COVERED WAGON by Paul Erickson was written and published before Erickson left high school: for further details on his career since that time and for a further lead for books by this offer, see my review of DAILY LIFE IN THE PILGRIM COLONY, 1636. If you are looking for invigorating books for the minds and hearts of schoolchildren, you could do no better than to search for the several titles in this series written for such young people; or whether you are an armchair or professional historian you could do not better than to look for and read Erickson's later books, especially those beginning to flow from the research and industrious work of this young historian who teaches in the History Dept. on the Wesleyan University campus, Middletown, CT. • Covered Wagon life revealed
The book is wonderful. If you've ever wanted to know what it's like to travel by wagon or what the challenges are, this diary is the book to read. Nice coverage of all the specifics of wagon life, day to day grind, etc. The illustrations are so well done that you can visualize everyday life, get a good idea for the feelings they must have had as they met up with different situations, and challenges along the way. Good book. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves the western world, early settlement eras, and American history. ... show more
