This works perfectly, and no batteries needed – the meter itself works just like a battery. Two dissimilar metals at the tip, activated by moisture in the soil which acts as an electrolyte, produces a very weak battery. The more moisture (electrolyte), the more current, the higher the reading. The instructions are basic – don’t submerge in water or you’ll ruin it, and wipe it down after use. That’s about it. It comes with a red rubber tip cover, which we keep on when not in use to protect the tip. My wife came up with the idea to use bread tie or pipe cleaner, so that she could quickly measure the necessary testing depth from the outside of the pot, and know exactly how far to insert it. I guess you could just mark it with your two fingers, but the pipe cleaner works great for her. Given the option between a short one and a long one, I’ll take the long one every time. It reads almost instantly (within 5 to 10 seconds), and my wife’s able to use it on small pots as well as huge planters on our pool deck. It would be nice if there were some way to download the little chart on the back of the package that tells you how wet or dry your particular plant is, but I can’t fault them for that. Incredibly helpful for our garden. Especially with the excessive heat and lack of rain this summer, it allows us to keep an eye on when it's time to water the more susceptible areas of the garden. I would tend to believe the readings are accurate as we've been using it over a week now and it has ebbed and flowed with rain , watering, and lack there of. Pros: - Works - Seems accurate enough.
