Description

Celestron has reinvented the manual telescope with the StarSense Explorer. This telescope uses patented sky recognition technology and your smartphone to analyze the sky and calculate its position in real time. Thanks to the app’s user-friendly interface and detailed tutorials, it’s like having your own personal tour guide of the night sky. Leave complicated star charts, imprecise planetarium apps, and computerized mounts behind. With the StarSense Explorer, locating objects has never been easier, faster, or more accurate. Within minutes, you’ll be navigating the sky with confidence. Place your phone in the unique StarSense dock and launch the app. After a simple, 2-minute alignment procedure, StarSense Explorer generates a list of celestial objects currently visible. Make a selection, and arrows appear on-screen, guiding you as you move the telescope. When the object is ready to view, the bullseye turns green. With a 80mm (approx. 3”) objective lens equipped with XLT optical coatings, this telescope has enough light gathering ability to deliver impressive views, especially when you bring it to a dark sky location. Enjoy sharp, bright views of Jupiter’s four Galilean moons, its cloud bands, Great Red Spot, the rings of Saturn, the trapezium in the Orion Nebula, and the beautiful Pleiades Open Star Cluster. An ultra-stable altazimuth mount with full-height tripod anchors the telescope. Slip clutches and geared slow-motion controls in both axes help you scan the sky smoothly, following objects with just a turn of the knobs. The Celestron StarSense Explorer works with iPhone 6 and up and most devices running Android 7.1.2 or later manufactured since 2016. For a complete compatibility list, visit celestron.com/sse

  • Great Gift!!
Style: StarSense Explorer LT 80
My son absolutely loves this. He is so fascinated by astonomy and has high hopes of becoming an astronomer. He carries this telescope outside almost every night and keeps track of things with the app on his phone. My favorite part is that I can keep getting him lenses and accessories to make it better. Overall great first telescope. We are able to see the rings of Saturn and comet tails! He is 15 and was able to assemble it without any help. Very light and easy to carry while staying higher quality. Would recoomend! ... show more

  • Excellent 1st telescope
Style: StarSense Explorer LT 80
This is a great first telescope for anyone interested in starting astronomy. It is light weight so you can travel and carry it easily. Easy to assemble with the manual and I am not that mechanically inclined. There are a few videos on YouTube of unboxing and assembly. It gives an excellent view of the moon. You can see the craters and mountains with the 25mm and 10mm eyepieces. As far as the planets Jupiter and Saturn you can see the moons of Jupiter very clear with the 25mm, but you won't be able to see the bands around Jupiter. It looks like a big bright star. But still very impressive. With the 10mm eyepiece you can somewhat make out the bands. Saturn you can see the ring. I would suggest getting another high powered eye piece with a wide field of view because of the low field of view the planets drift fairly fast because of the earth's rotation. Star clusters come in great! Pleiades and Caldwell 13 are beautiful! For a beginning star gazer or someone not wanting to spend a lot of money this is a wonderful first telescope. ... show more

  • Good telescope for adult/ big kid beginners and intermediate astronomers.
Style: StarSense Explorer LT 80
This telescope is good for its price and very sturdy. With its ease of use and clarity, it’s nice for beginners and intermediate astronomers. It was very easy to set up and use. The app didn’t work well for us. We were able to eye it and get a picture of Jupiter.

  • Good value for the price, but you get what you pay for
Style: StarSense Explorer LT 80
This is a good value for the price, and the app makes finding stars super easy. However, the build quality is kinda flimsy and it never really stays locked when you tighten the traverse and elevation screws. Even with everything tightened there’s a lot of wobble and shake to it, which makes focusing on things harder than it should. For the price it’s a fair value, but if you’re looking for something with a higher build quality you’ll probably be better off buying a better model. ... show more

  • Perfect Gift for Stargazers
Style: StarSense Explorer LT 80
I bought this telescope as a Christmas gift for my daughter, who has a passion for observing the moon and stars. She absolutely loves it! The telescope comes with a user-friendly app that aligns perfectly for viewing solar events, which has made her stargazing experiences even more exciting. Just a heads-up: it's designed for nighttime use only, so daytime viewing won't yield results. Overall, it's been a fantastic gift that has deepened her love for astronomy. ... show more

  • Not user friendly; difficult to see anything
Style: StarSense Explorer LT 80
Very difficult to set up. I even watched the YouTube videos. Also, YouTube reviews/setups. When you have to synch with iPhone which best to do in daylight, then you cannot remove your smartphone to keep it synched. Or, you have to do the process all over again. That's ridiculous! So from late afternoon to late evening, I cannot use my phone? After 5 months, I've yet to see even the moon. I have had better luck just looking up at the sky. I even tried to use the telescope without the smartphone, but nope - nada. I switched out lenses. Nothing. When I purchased in the beginning of the summer, I tried to use it at night a couple of times and got mauled by bugs. So I figured I would try again in the Fall, especially after the first freeze. Last night (11/6), I went out because it was a beautiful dark night sky and I can see Mars right above my house. All I saw was blackness in the scope. And, yes, I did remove the lens caps. The only thing I can say is unless you have an extra smartphone to leave connected (and outside) with the telescope, you can forget about using the smartphone tracking feature. Even though I live in the suburbs (outskirt of city area), we get some really good night sky vistas of Mars, Saturn, Jupiter. I've even been able to track the space station across the sky. Just by looking up (for free). So, unfortunately, I am out about $180 (after taxes); but more importantly, I am extremely disappointed. ... show more

  • MUST HAVE if you have never worked with telescopes before....
Style: StarSense Explorer LT 80
I am not sure why there are many complaints about the telescope and not able to see objects properly or in some at all. The first thing that you need to do is tune it well and after that never go directly using the 10 mm lens with the Barlow lens. Start with the 25 mm then go to the 10 mm and then use the Barlow lens focusing on the object with each initial view. Also understand that when focusing on planets, the planet might go out of the captured area because our planet is rotating on its axis too so keep on tracking how the planet you're viewing is moving in the sky relative to your position. If you end up to the most zoom using the 10mm and Barlow Lens you will notice the planet quickly move up or down depending on where you are. so move the telescope accordingly. Also, make sure that your telescope is held at a firm surface, slight vibrations can make you lose focus. There is a lot of learning you can do with this telescope that can help you use more expensive telescopes. My plan is to get more lenses in the future and work with this telescope for a few years and then buy a more expensive telescope with the tracking motor. I am very happy with this purchase and would suggest anyone to buy this as a starter. I have not used the StarSense app yet, it is very finicky, and use my own sky view app to track objects in the sky. That would be the only negative I have but that can be fixed if they make app updates. ... show more
