I guess I missed the part where it says this thing is 42 pounds period. Not 42 pounds with water or sand added, but 42 pounds all by itself. Dragging it inside is a workout. The instructions are simple enough except that 1) they mention a 1 1/4" adaptor which my kit didn't have, but it didn't matter in my case, and 2) the wrench supplied to tighten the nut which secures the part the umbrella slides into is way too big. I used the first thing I came across in my toolbox that looked about right, an 11/16" open wrench, and while that was also too big, it worked without rounding the bolt. I'm guessing a 5/8" wrench would fit better, although I'm sure the bolt is actually a metric size. The instructions say to oil the base to prevent corrosion. I used some gun oil I use on my garden tools that I store in an outside shed. I wiped it off, then put the base on a piece of cardboard so the oil wouldn't stain the patio. I'll wipe it a few more times before I remove the cardboard. It's a nice-looking base, probably nicer than any black plastic base. 42 pounds might be marginal for my ten-foot umbrella, but we'll see. It seems heavy enough, but I haven't had any strong winds yet. ... show more

    • It’s really lovely, but it was a little taller than I expected.
It is crafted well. I just wish I would have measured the bottom of my table because it was a bit higher than I thought it might be, but I will make it work.

Product was ok for a few months. Nice weight and stability, but the umbrella would spin in the wind until we screwed in the anchor bolt to the point where it damaged the umbrella pole... Not great, but serviceable. Then the next slight wind broke the anchor bolt at the tap welds- really expected better. ... show more

This is a replacement for the concrete-filled plastic base that was purchased with the umbrella. It is attractive, sturdy and does not leak rain water! Major improvement!
