Frequently asked questions

The Bissell Symphony Pet is designed with a unique technology that allows it to vacuum and steam clean floors at the same time. This two-in-one functionality enables users to efficiently remove dust, pet hair, and other debris while simultaneously steam cleaning to sanitize floors. The device has separate tanks for dust collection and water, ensuring that the vacuum and steam functions can operate independently or together, based on the cleaning needs.

Yes, the Bissell Symphony Pet is safe for use on all sealed hard floors, including hardwood, ceramic, linoleum, granite, and marble surfaces. The steam mop function can be adjusted to handle different levels of dirt and grime, while the soft microfiber pads ensure that your floors aren’t scratched or damaged during cleaning.

The microfiber mop pads that come with the Bissell Symphony Pet are washable and reusable. After use, remove the pads from the device, and wash them in your washing machine with a mild detergent. Avoid using bleach or fabric softeners as they can damage the pads’ fibers and reduce their efficacy. Allow the pads to air dry thoroughly before attaching them back to the mop head for next use. It's recommended to have multiple pads on hand to rotate them for the best cleaning experience.

The Bissell Symphony Pet is specifically designed to address the cleaning challenges pet owners face. It features strong suction to pick up pet hair and debris, and the steam cleaning function helps remove stains and odors from pets. Additionally, the vacuum's Drop-It technology allows for hands-free emptying of the dirt tank, minimizing exposure to pet dander and other allergens. The inclusion of washable microfiber pads also makes it economically and environmentally friendly for dealing with pet messes regularly.

  • Comparison of the Bissell Symphony Vacuum and Steam Mop to the Shark Pocket Steam Mop (or Why I Love My Symphony)
Style: Symphony Steam Mop
I have had, and really liked, the Shark Pocket Steam mop for several months. But there were a few things about it that I didn't really love, and then...one day I was vacuuming my hard floor, preparing to steam mop it, when it hit me: why wasn't there a device that both vacuumed and mopped at the same time? I did some research - and guess what, there is! It's called the Bissell Symphony! :-) So, here are a few things to note about the Symphony, and also things that I like about it compared to the Shark. First, when your Symphony arrives, the box will feel very heavy (much heavier than the Shark). I expected it to be somewhat heavier, because it has a vacuum built into it, but I didn't expect it to be *that* much heavier! Fear not, because it turns out that a lot of that weight is the packaging (both the external box from Amazon, which is large, and the actual Bissell packaging). Once you are dealing *only* with your Symphony, it is much lighter - still heavier than the Shark, of course, but not horribly so. Second, I love that with the Symphony the steam isn't on automatically all the time, like it is with the Shark. With the Symphony there is a little trigger button in the handle that you hold down if you want steam. Some people may not like that (having to hold down the trigger) but it is inside the handle so it's very easy and natural to hold it down, but if you don't want steam you can just take your finger off the trigger. (So yes, you can use it as just a vacuum, or, for that matter, as just a steamer - the vacuum on/off button is independent of the steam, and vice versa.) Third, the buttons to adjust between high and low steam are right there on the handle. On the Shark, the buttons are down at the bottom, so that you have to bend down and around to the front of the unit to switch between steam levels. (To be fair, with the Shark there are also three steam levels (dust, mop, and scrub) - with the Symphony there are only two (high and low), but I have never found myself wishing for a third level with the Symphony.) Fourth, the Symphony will actually stand up and stay here you put it. In other words, if you need to stop for a bit, or when you store the Symphony, it is free-standing. With the Shark, you need to secure it, or hang it up, or be very careful resting it against a counter or wall, because it does not lock into an upright position - the head always swivels. Fifth, I *love* how easy Bissell has made it to add water to the Symphony! And you can do it from a standing (the Symphony) position! You just flip open the little water 'door' on the back of the unit, and pour your water in. With the Shark, you have to lay the thing on its side on a counter or table, unscrew the cap, and then use a funnel or else pour the water in veeerrrry slooooowly because the opening is so small (otherwise you'll get water everywhere). Sixth, that Bissell had the foresight to team up with Swiffer to make it so that you could use a disposable Swiffer pad with the Symphony is just pure genius! With the Shark you can only use the reusable mop head covers. Now maybe that's all you *want* to use, but having the option to use either is brilliant! (In case it isn't clear how you use the disposable Swiffer pad, there is actually a second, replacement head that snaps on to the bottom of the Symphony - it is just like the other head *except* that it has a hinged rim that you open - put the Swiffer pad on - and then close the rim down over the Swiffer pad to hold it in place. And switching between heads is as easy as it gets - you step on a tab to remove (release) the one head, then set the Symphony down on top of the other head, and it just snaps into place! So, the big question is, how does it clean? How does it clean??? See that picture?? YUCK! :-) It's absolutely *brilliant* being able to mop (steam mop) and vacuum all at once. And if you find a place on your floor where you have a bit of extra solid stuff on the floor that you need to vacuum up (hey, it happens, especially with pets and kids), just take your finger off the steam trigger, vacuum it up, and then start steaming away again! And yes, the handle can be adjusted to go under tables, under beds, etc.. Now, we have a lot of shedding going on here, so yes, it *has* happened that at the end of mopping there may be a tiny fine line of wet pet hair that didn't get picked up (you know, like happens *whenever* you mop in a house with lots of animals, no matter how much you have swept and vacuumed first)...seriously, that has happened only one time, in one spot, and I just picked it up with a paper towel. Given that the 'lingering wet pet hair after mopping' *always* happens, with any type of mop (I think that after I sweep or vacuum, the dog and cat go behind my back and shed on the freshly swept floor *just* so I can have pet hair on the mop! .. "Wow, all of our hair has disappeared, she'll be so sad, let's go put some back on the floor right now!"), I'm not going to fault the Symphony for that - especially given what a fine job it does, and, compared to pretty much anything else! ... show more

  • Hand grenades and UFO's (update! plus one star)
Style: Symphony Steam Mop
We received our copy of this Vac/Steam unit just a few days ago and, so far - so good. We have two autistic kids, one 7 and one 5 year old and the two of them can make meal time... well, it sometimes looks like someone threw a grenade into a buffet table by the time we're all done eating - food gets everywhere, three times a day. Clean up with this thing has been much quicker and more efficient than by any other means we've employed to date. The vacuum has sufficient power to pick up most anything that I call "UFO's" (unidentifiable floor objects) be they small and sticky or otherwise. What the vacuum does not pick up is simply "mopped" with the steam function and to good effect, I might add. Combining the two functions is a stroke of genius. Clean out is simple enough as you just pull the collection cup and dump the contents out through the hinged bottom; the trick "plunger" action with the pre-filter helps too. The washable filter and other collection bin components are such a 'nice to have' that I now call it a necessity - just dump, rinse, dry and you're ready for another round of ruminatory mayhem. Why this thing gets four stars instead of five is that we have concerns about the robustness certain aspects of this item's construction. The locking tabs which hold the mop plate under the machine, in particular, seem like a potential weak point. They are made of plastic and not metal. Also, as with other stick vacs we've tried, the "neck" or coupling which connects the cleaner head to the vacuum body does not seem overly sturdy. Experience with similar units has shown fatigue failures at this point and there is no effective way to repair a break there. We've thrown away units that still ran as well as the day we bought them because, after a while, the plastic at the head/body junction has cracked from the daily stresses these units are exposed to under normal use. At a lower price for single function vac units, one can argue that such latent disposability can be lived with up to a point but this unit's cost raises the reliability bar in order to make it a competitive value. These concerns are conjecture at this point, of course; only time will tell. While we do take care and are not abusive with anything, we certainly do put an appliance like this to substantial use at our house; the weak will not make the cut. At this price point, I will be waiting for a while before handing over that last star. If the machine is still in service after most of a year, it could certainly be called a great value. At six moths of daily service I should well lose any buyers remorse and the machine will keep the current, four star, standing. A failure before that will get a downgrade. A timely update(s) to this review will be pending. UPDATE - Well... after more than six months, this thing is still going strong. Nothing has broken or failed. The washable filter has been great (I clean ours regularly) and we've only had to replace it once after all this vac has been through. I consider this unit, this cleaning system, to be a very good value. Five stars. :) ... show more

  • Works wonders...with help.
Style: Symphony Steam Mop
Let me start by saying I LOVE this product. I have all tile floors with two large, shedding dogs and a ton of sand and grass in the yard. All of this used to equal daily sweeping, a lot of vacuuming, and mopping - although I never found anything that didn't just push dirty water around the floor. Enter the Symphony Pet. I'd been eyeing hard floor cleaners for some time, and the all in one vacuum prospect was just too much to pass up. But I must confess that a Roomba also entered the scene at the same time. So my routine is now to let the Roomba vacuum the majority of things up and I follow up with the Bissell every few days. It's the perfect combo. The Bissell doesn't balk at sucking up dog hair, grass, dirt etc., but I also don't have to vacuum the entire house with it. I tried doing the whole house once with just the Bissell and it did pick everything up, but the tank filled up quickly (did I mention a LOT of dog hair?), and having to do both at the same time still made me a little crazy (if you're going to mop, you have to vacuum first or the dog hair just get wet and pushed around). That's not the products fault, but just know that this doesn't save that much time in the end. What I love: nice long cord, good suction, ability to quickly suck up dirt right before I steam mop, the steam mop itself - left my floors so clean!, steam starts up quickly, and it rolls over the floor really easily in both modes What I don't love: mop doesn't really allow for scrubbing - you do have to do several passes on stickier messes to get it loose, and the Swiffer disposable wet pads that come with it for "throw away messes" didn't do much to help in a pet accident - they're not absorbent so it's not acting as a true "mop" (had to clean first, but was happy to be able to steam clean afterward) ... show more
