  • Wavlink ax3000 dualband router and mesh compatible node
This is the AX3000 dualband router from Wavlink which was priced at $70 when ordered. The unit essentially looks and feels like every other standard router out there. Nothing really amazing or bad, just a plastic shell with some fairly light internals. Its the function of the internals that count I suppose. Articulation of the antennas was very good and the back side has a non stick base design with 2 holes for wall mounting. Setup should have been easier than it was for me, but it wasn't. I spent about an hour getting it configured. I am using a base station that is also from the Wavlink AX3000 series, but it looks very different. We had been using that unit for a few months as a dedicated autoswitching dualband wifi antenna, but wanted to employ its mesh hub capibility, so we ordered this unit to use as a node. To set up a mesh network you should first reset any units to be used in a mesh network and only setup the base unit. The base unit must then be setup to function as the mesh home hub. Once this is done, additional mesh nodes can be added by simply pairing them at the push of a button and then linking within 2 minutes via the mesh home hub using its ip address. I made the mistake of trying to configure this new node, do not do this. Only configure the home hub then pair the nodes through it. If done properly, setup with firmware updates could take less than 10 minutes. Once the system was configured it worked flawlessly. I am very happy with the performance of the new meshed wifi system as we are able to go anywhere in the house and get very strong 5G wifi without ever having to switch wifi portals. When using average wifi boosters it is inconvenient to lose signal and then have to switch portals whenever one is changing rooms. Setting up a mesh node wifi network has improved the wireless experience in our home and I am very satisfied with the end result. Coverage seems very good with close to max speeds even at 30ft, despite the fact the mesh node is connected wirelessly to the hub station 30ft away from it. Overall I am happy with this ax3000 unit for use as a mesh node. It works exactly as it should. If you know anyone that has any experience setting up a mesh wifi network, they can likley tell you some horror stories about trying to get devices to auto switch portals to the strongest wifi signal. The fact that this unit actually does this flawlessly, and didn't require a IT specialist to set up, makes it worth every penny. ... show more

  • Small table footprint, high bandwidth, working parental controls.
I got this router to replace my older one. This one has almost twice more bandwidth than my older WiFi 6 AX1800. It is advertised as AX3000 meaning that it's got 2x300MBps spatial streams at 2.4GHz band and 4x600MBps at 5.8GHz. My old one had the same speed at 2.4GHz and twice less bandwidth at 5.8GHz band. While my smart devices sit on the slow 2.4GHz band my household smartphones, laptops, tv boxes and PCs are connected to the 5.8GHz band. Another problem that I had with the old router was outdated parental controls. They tracked kids' devices by MAC addresses. Kids simply enabled MAC address privacy mode where these addresses were generated randomly every time device connects to Wifi. To enforce parental controls I had to white-list only real hardware device MAC addresses and maintain a 50 row spreadsheet of what is what. New router has a new implementation of parental controls. You can configure only 2 rules but each of them has its own WiFi network which gets shutdown when the rule starts to block. This takes care of MAC address randomization, but you have to be careful not to give out the main WiFi network password. ... show more

  • Fast device for the money but it's mesh system can be a challenge with cell phones and Alexa devices
I bought 4 of these and set up a mesh system about at the end of March 2024. It gives us very good coverage in a large multi-story house and outbuildings and the connections are fast. The problem is that this system can be unpredictable with Alexa devices and cell phones operating in wifi mode which were two of the primary reasons we installed them. We live in an area with spotty cell coverage, so they operate almost exclusively in wifi mode when making calls. If you make a call and you stay in one place these tend to work well anywhere in our area. The problem is if you walk around while you are talking and the phone tries to switch from one router to another the call is often dropped or one party or the other loses suddenly cannot hear the other person. I do not know if this is because of our cell phones or because of the routers. One would think that Alexa devices such as switches, lights, thermostats and other devices would not have difficulty since they are stationary, but the results are completely unpredictable. Some device work OK most of the time but others have trouble intermittently. I have spent many hours trying to get them to work reinstalling using the Alexa App and plugging and unplugging them. Sometimes they work for a day or two and then quit. Other times devices that I have given up on start working again and then quit a few minutes or days later. I continue troubleshooting the system that I set up and at this point the system seems to be working better. At this point I do not know whether the routers were completely to blame. If you are just trying to use a laptop, or if you are using your phone or tablet for data and you are not moving around these routers work well and are very fast and a good value. But if you are doing something where a device is switching from one router to another within the mesh system... you likely will end up having difficulties. The system also has difficulties working with Alexa home automation devices such as switches lights and thermostats and the Echo devices themselves. Most of them seem to be working OK now but the system continues to provide a lot of troubleshooting challenges. ... show more
