    • Looks beautiful and works like a dream!
This arrived a few days ago, and I tried it today. I already have a small, ceramic mortar and pestle, but they aren't that good. The Alva Nori Mortar and Pestle set is leaps and bounds a superior product. I need to grind some whole spices (cinnamon stick, whole cloves, whole allspice and pepper corns) together to a powder, for an Asian recipe. The old set I had would have taken forever, if it worked at all. The Alva Nori set ground it all together in no time! Seriously, less than a minute and I had the spice mix I needed. The set is heavy, made of Cast Iron, which allows for pounding tough bits. It has a roughened texture over almost all of it, which allows for easier grinding. Being made of cast iron (with a blackened mineral oil finish) means that you have to address the question of rust. Yes, if you wash it (which you should) and leave it in the dish rack to dry (which you shouldn't) or leave it in a sink full of water (which you absolutely shouldn't,) the unit will rust. The easiest way to keep away rust is to treat it like you would a cast iron fry pan; wash it, dry it with a towel or paper towels and wipe it down with a couple drops of mineral oil. It isn't the kind of kitchen tool that you're likely to use daily, so giving it a little extra treatment is worth it.     • Beautiful but I struggle with practicality
To start with, a disclosure: this is the second Alva cookware item I have reviewed through Vine. It's actually the first Alva item I ordered, but it took longer to arrive. I was really disappointed with the other item because it was incorrectly described and a poor value. This, on the other hand, is correctly described. It's also a really nice design from a visual perspective. It looks every bit as good as the listing pictures, and it feels substantial even though it is rather thin cast iron. They did a very good job of designing a good looking mortar and pestle. It's going to be high maintenance because it's seasoned cast iron and will rust. Heat it up and keep it oiled between uses, and be very careful how you use, clean, and dry it. Cast iron isn't an ideal choice for acidic foods but it's great for oily stuff. But that's not unique to this mortar and pestle set. People have been using cast iron mortar and pestle sets for a very long time and they are all like this. This is a nice size, it looks nice, it feels nice, it is correctly described and works as it should. It expensive relative to some similarly functional mortar and pestle sets, but there is nothing wrong with buying something you like the look of and does the job you need to do. ... show more

It had a raised lump in the bowl from a casting defect that I had to grind down. But after that was addressed this thing is awesome. It is rougher than my old stone one, but I really like that as it makes quick work of whatever I put in there. It cleans up easily and I treat it like I do my cast iron pans with no problems. ... show more

This Alva brand mortar and pestle set is fantastic. I have a small stone mortar and pestle, which is fairly smooth inside, and it works okay, but the rough texture of this cast iron mortar is much better at holding the product in place for grinding. There is nothing easier or more tasty than fresh made guacamole, or pesto, and this mortar is perfect for smaller batches. Rust is not a problem if you season and treat this set like your prized cast-iron skillets, and don't leave acidic foods in the mortar any longer than you have to, or don't put them in the cast iron at all.     • Works well, but difficult to clean and $$$
I received this through the Amazon Vine program, not noticing the over-$90 price tag! That would definitely have been a deal-breaker for me. That said, the unit is really a piece of art - beautiful and heavy. I did wash and dry it before use, but neglected to dry every crevice and ended up with rust right out of the gate. Going forward, I think I'll just wipe it with a lightly-oiled cloth before storage. This did a GREAT job on cumin seeds and I expect it will work well for whatever I throw at it. This mortar and pestle is beautiful and elegant and makes a nice aesthetic addition to any kitchen. FOr anyone wondering about size, this is a small item, and can fit fit about a cup. Functionally, I found this mortar and pestle to do a great job with turning garlic into a paste. After using, washing, you must rub some oil on it to prevent it from rusting, this is the standard upkeep for ALL cast iron tools! Highly recommend. ... show more

I was immediately impressed when I opened this top quality mortar and pestle. It performs better than anything I've tried before and I love the fact that it's made from cast iron and not stone. It works really well and is easy to grind down spice or hard grains. It's easy to clean, and simply wipe down with some food safe oil after use and it stays looking good as new.
