  • Assembly Advice from a Cabinetmaker, Also 1 of 2 boxes was lost by FedEx - ALFA shipped it fast!
Size: 55x28" Color: Medium Walnut Top+ White Frame
Full disclosure - I'm not a cabinetmaker but I worked my way through engineering school as a cabinetmaker and spent over 25,000 hours building furniture. The quality of this desk is really very impressive. It's got a thick table top laminated equally on both sides which keeps it from warping. Formica type laminate is used on the edges instead of the paper thin laminate that many manufactures use. The Formica type laminate is meant to last a lifetime. the paper thin laminate that other manufacturers use starts peeling off after a few years. The base of the desk is made of robust steel components which will last a lifetime. This desk is equivalent to Steelcase brand desks that cost more than twice the price. Having said that, the assembly instructions are not ideal. Following is a set of steps that will make for an easier and better desk assembly. First, about the tools that ALFA says you need: - Wrench - You do not need a wrench. - Hex head wrench (also called an Allen Wrench) is provided by ALFA - So you don't need to get one. -Electric Drill: PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT USE AN ELECTRIC DRILL to drill holes for the various screws that are screwed into the underside of the desk top during assembly. TRUST ME ON THIS. The screws they provide are in-fact sheet metal screws and they are self tapping in fiber board. If you use a drill you can easily drill too far and break through the other side which is the desk top. Do that and you will cry! Here are the tools you should use to build the desk (See my attached photo): - The hex head (Allen Wrench) that ALFA provided (It's in the box with the hardware) - A phillips head screw driver for the phillips head screws that ALFA provides for the assembly - A sharp object, preferably a scratch awl (Amazon sells a "General tools Scratch Awl for $6.99) - A Hammer - A rubber or rawhide mallet. Or a block of wood and the hammer already mentioned. Here are the easiest and most effective assembly steps: - ALFA Step 1: Do as ALFA states - Put the desk top face down on a blanket to protect the laminate surface that can be easily scratch by dirt, especially on a non carpeted floor. The underside which has holes already drilled in it should be face up. - ALFA Step 2: When you insert the longitudinal beams into the cross beam - After positioning each longitudinal beam in place tapping it with a rubber or rawhide mallet will help to seat the beam in place. If you don't have one of these mallets you can use a small block of wood to protect the surface of the longitudinal beams and then just tap a regular hammer against the wood to seat the beam in place. - ALFA step 3. Place the Cross Beam and Longitudinal Assembly you just completed in ALFA Step 2 on the underside of the desk. Line up the 8 holes on both Longitudinal Beams and the 4 holes on the Crossbeam with the predrilled holes on the underside of the table. Take the I Screws and place them one at a time into the 12 holes and tighten them loosely (not all the way) with the Phillips Head screwdriver. Once all 12 screws are in place the base will be perfectly aligned with the table top. Now turn all 12 screws down tightly. - ALFA Step 4, 5, 6, and 7: Follow ALFA's instructions. - ALFA Steps 8, 9 & 10 (Installing the Electronics): See my attached photo of the desk underside: A) Place the J control box where you think you want it but don't screw it in place yet. B) Place the K Control where you think you want it and don't screw it in yet. C) Now look at page 7 and use the wiring schematic to attach the wires to the control box J and the Display K as shown in the schematic. D) Now route the cables where you want them on the bottom of the table (If you prefer, see my attached photo to see how I routed the cables). Put the R wire clips on the cables. E) Now make sure you are happy with the placement of the Control Box J, The Display K, and the Cables and R-Wire Clips. Make any adjustment you want to these placements. F) You will now attach the Control Box J to the underside of the desk. First take the Scratch Awl (or other sharp instrument) and place it through one hole at the ends of the Control box. Tap the scratch awl with your hammer to make a small dimple to start the screw hole. Align the point of the screw with the dimple and press down while turning the screw with the Phillips Head Screwdriver. Don't tighten the screw all the way down yet. If necessary, adjust the position of the Control box so it's parallel with the connecting beam. Then use the scratch awl and hammer to make a dimple for the 2'nd screw on the other end of the Control Box. Drive the screw in place with the Phillips Head Screwdriver and then tighten down the other screw. G) Position the K Display where you want it and follow the same procedure you just used for the control box in steps F, using two P screws. H) Now use the scratch awl, hammer, and Phillips Head screw driver to fasten the R-Wire Clips in place. - ALFA Step 11 - Follow ALFA's steps on pages 7 and 8 - ALFA Troubleshooting and General Tips - Follow ALFA's instructions Hope these assembly steps help. Good Luck! One other thing worth mentioning - ALFA provides excellent support. One of two boxes that make up the desk was lost by FedEx. ALFA Furnishings replied back to me within one day and shipped out the box of missing parts on the next business day. I really appreciate their quick response since my daughter will need it for college and it will arrive in time. Great service! ... show more

  • Solid desk but feeling cheated
Size: 60x30" Color: White Top + White Frame
I purchased this desk seeing the excellent reviews, there were also similar desks for half the cost but questionable quality concerns. What I like about the desk is how solid it is, there is no lose pieces or shaking when the desk is being raised or lowered. The desktop is one solid piece that is built with quality. The legs are solid as a rock. The assembly took about 30 minutes including unpacking (perks of having a power tool) It took me several hours figuring out how to place my monitor arms and tucking in all the wires underneath the desk. What I didn't like about the desk is how I was mislead on the size. The description states the desk is 60" x 30" but actually it is 59" by 29.5". Does this impact the desk quality? Does it limit what I intended to do with the desk? Obviously no... But I felt like I was mislead from false information especially for the price point of this standing desk. For that reason I take off one star. Would I recommend this desk others? If their budget allows it, I would but will tell them about the true size of the desk. ... show more

  • Works as advertised, good quality for an affordable table
Size: 48x30" Color: Medium Walnut Top+ White Frame
So far so good (will update if the motor breaks down)! My favorite parts are the width and smooth movement. My requirement was a table top of approx 30" and there are few on the market. This width allows you to place a monitor at a good distance to prevent eye strain. The motor is quiet and moving the table up and down is really smooth. It's nice to have 4 presets. The table overall is also very sturdy so none of the items on the table rattle around as the table moves up and down. Reading other reviews was really helpful to get an idea of the assembly. As others mentioned, you really need to drill holes into the table top before drilling in the screws. The existing holes serve more as guides but are way too small to drive the screw driver down without damaging the table top as it will start chipping away since the table top quality isn't the highest. The 4 in the middle are completely useless so don't bother with those. You have to drill in 4 extra holes that have no guides - 2 for the motor box and 2 for the display device. The photo with the red circle shows the hole you have to create for the motor box and 2 of the center guides (which I drilled to enlarge) aren't necessary. In a way I prefer being able to drill the holes for the display devce since you can place it anywhwere you like. I used a long, thin metallic marker to create markings of where to drill (the hole for the nails to keep the motor box in place are deep so you'll need a thin pen). I used both the paper manual and video to assemble this. The steps on the video are more accurate since the leg base is already pre-assembled as shown in the video but not the paper manual. The num of metal screw F is 8 but 4 came in the box and 4 are already on the leg base. I used the paper manual primarily to identify the type of screws used for each part of the assembly since you can't really tell from the video. You won't need the single sided wrench shown the manual. The socket head wrench comes with the other parts. The other photo uploaded shows all the extra parts and screws not used in the assembly. The corners of the table top are pretty sharp so I used the corner covers that came with the table top packaging to cover the corners (you can definitely accidently scratch walls otherwise). As others mentioned, the cord situation is a bit awkward as there are many and the cord clips that come with it aren't too helpful so I used twisties to wrap them up. Shipping was quick and the parts are packaged well for the most part. Make sure you get all 3 packages. The table top does have a few scratches on the edges and the underside (kind of long scratches but at least on the underside), but nothing too obvious. I thought the walnut color would be a bit too dark or an ugly brown but I really like the tone (lighter than the photos). Fyi, there's another posting by the same seller for the same tables with a different title so make sure to check all the pricing options before purchasing. Considering there are more expensive options (with way more reviews) for a similar quality table top, I think this is priced right and would recommend this table. ... show more

  • Good desk so far
Size: 60x30" Color: Medium Walnut Table Top+ Black Frame
- Has pre-drilled holes for hardware assembly. - Assembly instructions suggest using a drill but the screws can be set with muscle power (even in locations with no pre-drilled holes). - Motors are pretty quiet and have smooth motion. Nice. - Pretty heavy when fully assembled. Lift with your legs, not your back. - Tabletop ships separately from the legs. - Tabletop arrived damaged, with an abrasion roughly the size of a penny where something fully penetrated the cardboard box and thin layer of styrofoam. Luckily it was on the bottom rear of the tabletop where I can ignore it. ... show more
