  • Excellent Beginner Book to gain an appreciation of the Great Composers!
I have a whole slew of these "A First Book of. . ." series. These books are great for the Beginner who is learning how to play the piano correctly. I'm referring to the holistic approach where the student really focuses on dynamics, timing, and tone. While the pieces are short, easy excerpts of much more difficult pieces, these books go a good job introducing students to pieces that they are likely years away from actually playing. When a serious student takes their time to really play and master these short pieces they will gain an appreciation of why the original pieces have withstood the test of time and they will hear their pianistic development after slow, deliberate practice to play the pieces as intended (not just focused on accuracy). When my books arrive I immediately go to the website (listed inside the cover of the book) and listen to each of the very rudimentary samples of the songs and highlight which I really like and want to play in the future. Then I add the book to my collection and find that I periodically pick them up and decide to learn one of my highlighted songs to submit to my online PianoCareerAcademy.com forum as one of my monthly voluntary submissions for other students enjoyment. These books will inspire the Pianist to tackle the intermediate versions of the songs in the future. ... show more

  • Great introduction to Bach.
I am a music teacher and have used books from this series often. The pieces are well chosen for a low end intermediate student. The beginning of the book (wisely) uses material with basic rhythms and as you go through the pages they introduce more dotted rhythms and 16th note rhythms. By the time someone had enough piano experience to play this music, for sure they would be beyond beginner books where there tends to be a lot of fingering numbers included. Every not in this book is marked with a fingering number. For some students that might be a good thing. It is not a great thing from a teacher's point of view. ... show more

  • Just what our studio has been looking for!
These books are exactly what we have been looking for. Our studio, Fox Music Instruction (find us on Facebook), has a focus on inspiring our students to explore the depth of expression found in classical music. Because of this, we have found it somewhat difficult to source arrangements of classical masterpieces that are appropriate for the level of our students. These books address that need wonderfully. There are around a dozen "First books" focusing on a single composer's works and two other books that more general and help students explore many different composers' works in the same book. The only downside to the series is that there are no offerings specifically suited to primer or early level 1 students. These books are more levels 2-4 approximately. However, that does not detract from the value of what is offered in my view. We have decided to implement these books as a regular part of the repertoire curriculum for our students (who are of the right level) henceforth. In summation, while these books may not suit the needs of every student or studio, they do a wonderful job suiting the vision of our studio and the needs of many of our students! ... show more

  • 7 yo loves this book
Excellent for beginners -- my little kids were playing many of the songs within 10-12 weeks of their first piano lesson. I've purchased First Book of Beethoven and Mozart (they are all excellent) but this is their favorite since so many of the songs are easy to play and pleasing to their ear.

  • Great book!
This series of books are great for introducing little ones and adults to classical music. These master pieces have been genially simplified, so easy to play that even piano beginners can play! Great for piano teachers!

  • Great book on simple Bach
This is a great introduction to Bach but it has a lot of hand transitions and not truly a young beginner book like I had hoped. But great for an adult beginner or older child.

  • Perfect for Young Child
My little grandson loves classical music, so I've purchased a number of these Beginning Pianist books for him. They offer a little information about the composer and about each piece of music, along with the first page or two of sheet music for each piece. The sheet music is very simplified, so it's not overwhelming for a child. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • A Useful Book for a Beginner
This book is definitely for a beginner so it is what it says it is 'A First Book...' The great thing is that you can go and listen to the songs on the web site that is listed inside the book. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was that the songs were so easy that it was actually kind of hard to recognize a song. But I do feel that it's a useful book for a beginner to get comfortable playing and Bach is a good place to begin. ... show more
